Title: Biggest leap of weight in a wrestler's college career?
Post by: AnthonyMarston on January 20, 2011, 01:10:15 PM
Corey Jantzen has moved up 16lbs in 2 years.  Anyone else that comes to mind?  Cael moved up 13lbs senior year.

Mike Churella won two titles at 150 then jumped all the way to 167 to win his 3rd.

Grajales of Michigan has jumped (unwillingly) from 133 to 149 this season. Slaton of Iowa was in the 170s  and trying to cut to 133 if any credence is given to the Hawkeye boards (can't remember if thinking this info was coming from someone reputable or not, so file this under speculation for the time being). What ever happened to the poster infatuated with Mark Kist? A well timed response here could be humorous.

Wonder why he skipped over 158??  I'm sure it had nothing to do with Kelly Ward.

In 1971 a 177lber named Jim Shields from Okla St. moved up to Heavyweight and took 3rd at the NCAA losing only to eventual champion Greg Wojiechowski and giving him the closest match of the tournament.

In the mid-90's I believe Clarion's Dan Payne went from 177 to HWT and made AA.

Nebraska's Jordan Borroughs started out his freshman year at 141 but moved up to 149 in December. He was a NQ at 149 as a frosh, AA at 149 as a soph, undefeated NC at 157 as a junior, and is currently ranked #1 at 165.

Patrick Wright of Missouri wrestled 157 last year and has wrestled 184 several times this year, but mostly 174.

Phil Simpson of the Army went from 141 to 157 from his sophomore to junior seasons.  He went back to 149 as a senior.

Pat Williams of Arizona state wrestled almost every weight class from 141 to 184 during his four years of wrestling.  I remember reading results from one year Williams wrestling 184 in a dual and then the next year he being at 149.   Still blows my mind!

I believe that Ralph Everett of Hofstra did the same thing.

Matt Pell from Wisconsin was a 3x Wisconsin state champ at 145.  At Missouri he was AA at 184 in 2005 (7th) and AA at 165 in 2007 (3rd).  Of course he had a team-mate who was pretty much dominating 174 at the time -

Daryll Pope of Cal-St. Bakersfield was an All-American at 158, 167, and 177 lbs. from 1985-87.  Senior years, he was undefeated and lost in the NCAA finals to Rico Chiapparelli of Iowa in the finals 5-2.  Score was 3-2 Chiapparelli with about 30 seconds left when Pope got in deep on a shot and they had the wildest scramble I've ever seen with Chiapperalli finally coming out on top for the clinching takedown.

145 as a frosh and 285 as a senior.

Nick Roy, Michigan, 3 years of being highly ranked at 174, bombing at the championships and never getting his AA, then bumping to 197 in senior year and garnering his AA placing 8th.

I was going off the info on his HS's website. I've read it elsewhere too, though.
