I'm again producing an NCAA Division I Championships Digital Fan Guide. This will be the third year I've done. Some might remember the first one during my run with the AWN/TOM merger.

Right now, I'm adding a lot more stats than I had last year and always trying to find more stuff to cram in there.

It's a digital download and pre-orders are available now for automatic delivery on March 15 (or possibly before).

It's approaching 200 pages with EVERY SINGLE WRESTLER'S RECORD, history, facts, stats and even a fantasy/pickem primer!

The first year, it was big. Last year, it was bigger. Now in 2015, it's 180 pages.

The Mat Talk Online D1 Wrestling Championship Digital Fan Guide is available for $14.99 at

That link is specific for viewers/readers of TOM. TOM gets a cut of the sales generated from that link. It's optimized for tablets, but works fantastic on your computer. Phones might be a tad small, but all the info on every qualifier is there.

There's historical stats and notes here that have NEVER been published before.

Got your pick'em league? This makes you the most educated man (or woman) in the league. As far as winning, that's up to you.

Talked with Matthew Modine about his role as Louden Swain and current projects.

College / 30 Years of Vision Quest (36 Actually) - Part 1
« on: January 29, 2015, 11:26:09 PM »
I've released Part 1 of my three-part podcast series about the 30-year anniversary of Vision Quest's theatrical release.
The first part ( is with Terry Davis, the author of the book Vision Quest in which the movie was based. While the book was released in 1979, I figured it was a fitting place to start. It was the second time I'd interviewed Davis, but the first time in nearly six years.
Parts 2-3 will be released in mid-February.
I figured with the amount of wrestling people who have seen the movie (isn't that just about all of us?), it might be appropriate.

With only a 12-team National College field this year, we're going with four pools, champs wrestle into semis, every team gets 4 matches. American College field is still an 8-team bracket.

College / For those who have seen Foxcatcher, looking for your comments

I saw Foxcatcher on Saturday here in Minnesota and will be discussing some things about the film in an upcoming episode of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast. I want to include some feedback from people who have seen the film and put it into the show. You can leave your 90-second audio message (no extra software or hardware required, just your computer's mic) at Some of the responses may make it into the episode.

College / This isn't good bye ... but it's a change

For the last two years, I’ve been grateful to work with in providing a high-level of wrestling news, coverage, results and original content. My official title as “editor” will be retired as I’ll be moving on to concentrate on new ventures and opportunities.

I will still remain a relationships with TheOpenMat as a contributor for future columns or opinion pieces, but my day-to-day operations with the website have come to an end.

After leaving USA Wrestling, Eric Bettermann offered me a unique opportunity. At the time, TOM was working with a merger with Amateur Wrestling News. There were issues with my young daughter that made a move back to Minnesota a no-brainer and when the TOM opportunity dropped in my lap, I thought it would be the best situation at the time, and it was. I hadn’t planned on leaving USA Wrestling in 2012, but sometimes things don’t always go the way you think they will.

For over a year, we produced what we believed to be an improved magazine tied together with the web’s most complete news resource. Unfortunately, the relationship with TOM and AWN didn’t work out as originally planned and due to my status as a independent contractor, I opted to stick with the TOM side of things. Working with Eric and Ray Brinzer on a slightly different take to wrestling coverage was enjoyable. Having known Ray for a number of years prior to coming on board, I developed a friendship beyond business with Eric.

Some ideas didn’t come to fruition and ultimately, I had to make a plan that would be beneficial to all parties. We feel this is a move forward for both myself and for TOM. I’m not just dropping everything and bolting, leaving TOM to fend for itself. I’ll still assist in some capacity when needed and contribute a story here and there.

I’m extremely happy in being able to help build TOM into a real powerhouse of wrestling coverage. You’ll still hear me on some TOM live audio broadcasts and I’ll be there in a pinch if some tech issues arise.

So for now, I’ll be maintaining my role as a freelance broadcaster and journalist while spending ample time on building my new (but old) business with Mat Talk Online. Some of you might know that’s the site that got me started back in 1997 when I created it in my dorm room. Short Time will continue to exist and relevant episodes will still be posted on TOM’s news site.

I’m currently working in consulting or freelance roles with a few different factions, so I’m not leaving wrestling – I’ll never leave wrestling if I can help it.

TOM will still be providing rankings, features, videos, scores and everything you’ve come to know and visit on the site, the only difference is my name won’t be officially attached to it. This community was built for the fans and was a resource I believed was truly for the fans, whether we agreed on things or not. It’s been a unique and enjoyable place to get to know several of you here personally – those I didn’t know beforehand. I’ve had a lot of good times at the Midlands with Fuhr and Bryce and even got to meet some of our more seasoned posters like Vise and Jammen.

Chael gives us some gold here. Like him or hate him, he's always entertaining.

First two weights have been posted. The rest will be finished up today.
