Put on your predicting caps, break out those tarot decks and crystal balls. Predict what the end of Trump's presidency will be.

We have a couple guys trying to go to Fargo and we're hurting for money to get them there

High School & Lower / Some Kentucky Wrestling for you
« on: April 17, 2017, 10:28:54 pm »
Our Middle School coach is posting film of some of the live goes from our open mats and there is some decent stuff in there. Obviously this isn't Kentucky's top talent right now (i.e. Brandon Reed, Ryan Moore, Saul Ervin, etc) but the coach (short sleeve black shirt) was a state placer and a state title threat before getting hurt his senior year. Short sleeve redshirt was probably the third best guy at his weight but he's the one who got chocked out when he had a good shot at the state finals. Long sleeve orange is a tough kid who we thought would place but is only a sophomore. Short sleeve white is a freshman who made it to state. Blue sweatpants is a two time qualifier and we're still waiting for him to have his breakthrough year. Finally the kid in the short sleeve grey is our star 6th grader and the coach's protege so to speak. I was unfortunately at track practice when this was filmed otherwise you could catch some of my lazy wrestling

Wrestlingref - Officiating / Bizarre Locking Hands Scenario
« on: February 22, 2017, 07:14:22 am »
This was my guys match in the blood round, it's a call that went our way but was just so insane I still can't believe it happened. I'm telling people who ask that it's a once in a lifetime call.

Basically the match ends on a score of what we think to be 8-7 with my guy losing. But the ref immediately goes over to the table and checks the scorebook, and says he made a mistake. There were three stall calls in the match and he accidentally awarded one point instead of two for the third stall call so the score should be 8-8. Then he calls over the head supervising ref and discusses the fact that our guy also should've been given choice of position, they decide to put 15 seconds back on the clock and give my wrestler choice of position. My wrestler is a monster on bottom and we pick bottom, get an easy escape, and win. If it wasn't in the far corner of the arena I'd imagine more people would be discussing the call because it's just something you never see.

So I'm wondering on what the refs here think of that call. I just can't believe they put time back onto a clock myself.

High School & Lower / State Tournament
« on: February 15, 2017, 07:44:10 pm »
So Kentucky's state tournament is this weekend. We're taking 9 total after finishing second in our region to the #2 team in the state. I'm really proud of the kids considering we were missing three of our best wrestlers, a potential state placer was forced to quit by his parents and a potential state champ did something and his dad made him stay home. But our backups came to wrestle and two of those backups even qualified for state. Of the group we're taking we have a potential state finalist, and about three potential placers. Hopefully I can share good news after Saturday

Wrestlingref - Officiating / Near Fall from a switch
« on: February 04, 2017, 05:30:15 pm »
Really close match, my wrestler hits a switch from bottom and is leaning back hard on top of he wrestler. Time runs out before he can finish the switch but then the ref calls two near fall.

I go and ask the ref her reasoning and she goes "when he was leaning back on top of the wrestler he was within 4 inches." I point out that it wasn't an offensive action from the top wrestler and she goes "it doesn't have to be" I point out my kid is in a switch and is leaning back on top of him and she goes "no he wasn't in a switch when he was leaning back on him"

We end up losing the match off the call and it was consi semis so it's pretty heated. My wrestler still ends up losing his head when the match was still winnable

Wrestlingref - Officiating / Locking Hands
« on: January 20, 2017, 08:34:11 pm »
JV Regional tournament so it's pretty relaxed and it's two C team refs with an A team ref who was out most of the year and getting back in his groove.

Anyway our kid is in the 3rd place match, at a JV tournament, so it isn't very pretty wrestling. Anyway the kid blatantly locks hands right in front of the refs face, no call.

After the match (and calling the other guy's power half as a full nelson) the ref comes over and explains to us that he saw the locking hands but he "let go before I could blow the whistle" so he decided not to call it. He later missed a blatant escape call so I guess it balanced out

Other Sports / JCU beats Mount Union
« on: November 13, 2016, 01:08:37 pm »

It is the first win by my alma mater over Mount Union since 1989, first OAC title for John Carroll since 1989, first regular season loss for Mount Union since 2005. Basically this is one of the biggest upsets in the history of Division III Football.

Mount Union basically is the only name that matters in D3 Football, a couple years ago we thought we had a shot at beating them with our QB who had NFL talent but we lost. But I guess this time even though our QB wasn't as good the rest of the team was good enough to pull off the upset. Only thing better would've been if it had happened in University Heights instead of Alliance.

I went to high school with Antonio, we got into it a couple times and the whole incident doesn't really surprise me. Interested in seeing other people's thoughts

International / Mongolian Protest
« on: August 21, 2016, 01:17:19 pm »
I don't think I've ever seen coaches protest through stripping before

Also I think the Mongolians are completely right here people circle and celebrate early every tournament and it has happened several times already you can't just decide to call that with one second left completely changing the result.

It was a beautiful match leading up to that too

International / Greco day 1

Well that challenge in the Thielke match may go down as one of the most catastrophic challenges of all time. I can't think of a time I ever saw a gut wrench converted into a throw by ruling before.

Also right after the match ends I hear who I think was Thielke shout "why did we challenge?" I agree there it was only 6-0 because of two gut wrenches and the argument they made was a weaker argument, Thielke was fine.

I remember this was one of Herb's favorite books. It's one of my favorites as well, I have to full cast audiobook and it's one of my favorites.

It got picked up by Starz and I recommend you check out the teaser

College / Geo Martinez to Ok State
« on: July 07, 2016, 08:22:04 pm »

Wasn't something I expected to happen. I'm guessing he wanted to go somewhere after the head coach fiasco at BSU, and there are close ties between the BSU and Ok State program.

I am guessing he redshirts and takes over 149/157 after Collica graduates.

Mixed Martial Arts / Jon Jones out of UFC 200

Failed his drug test way back in June and they didn't tell UFC the results until yesterday. I wouldn't be surprised if Dana White tore his office apart

Off-Topic / USA Track and Shaq Walker
« on: July 04, 2016, 10:38:27 am »

Shaq Walker is an old friend of mine, we went to middle school together. He's probably one of the kindest guys you'll ever meet, never said anything but the kindest words to me despite me being a bit of a weirdo. We were in the drama program together

Anyway Shaq was competing for an Olympic spot in the 800 meters and was doing really well. He gets tripped from behind and finishes just outside of qualifying position. Two protests are filed one from Shaq's team and one from the other guy. They decide against all evidence that Shaq was at fault and DQ him. They later overturn the DQ but with no explanation. So the guy who obviously wasn't going to qualify gets to advance while the guy who could've won it is left behind. My father is a track guy, ran D1, and he's been complaining about US track and field for ages, we basically shoot ourselves in the foot everytime and never send our best team.

The guy who tripped Shaq's coach is good friends with one of the Track and Field head coaches and you can't help but wonder if that played a part
