College / Wrestlers unbeaten streaks
« on: June 01, 2020, 06:24:30 PM »
Unbeaten, not win, streaks as some had ties.  If the History of Collegiate Wrestling had a different stat than the school's web site I went with the former as being more reliable.  Note that some historic figures don't make the list simply for lack of matches (Yojo Uetake, Dan Hodge, etc).  Additions/corrections are welcome

1) 159 Cael Sanderson (IA St)

2) 103 Lee Kemp (WI)

3) 98 Pat Smith (Okie St)

4) 96 Dan Gable (IA St)

5) 94 Zain Retherford (PSU)

6) 90 John Smith (Okie St)

7) 89 Jim Zalesky (IA)

8,9) 88 Kerry McCoy (PSU), Gwiz (NC St)

10, 11) 87 Chris Taylor (IA St), Ben Askren (MO)

12,13,14) 84 Ed Ruth (PSU), Gray Simons (LH), Mike Land (IA St)

15) 83 Stephen Neal (CSUB)

16) 82 Alex Dieringer (Okie St)

17) 77 Kyle Dake (Corn)

18) 76 Cole Konrad (MN)

19,20) 74 Troy Steiner (IA), Mike Sheets (Okie St)

21,22) 69 Brent Metcalf (IA), Tom Brands (IA)

23,24) 67 Mark Ironside (IA), TJ Williams (IA)

25,26) 65 Dustin Schlatter (MN), Alan Fried (Okie St)

Thanks.  Really pleased to see that.

College / Ridge Lovett non-escape call
« on: January 25, 2020, 12:07:37 PM »
Does anyone have an understanding of the ref's reasoning?  Is it that if Lovett had released RBY's ankle then it would be an escape, but because he was trying to pull RBY in bounds,  RBY's  hand fighting showed control?

I personally think that the ref lost track of the action and then didn't want to admit his mistake.

College / Live Stream Schedule
« on: December 19, 2019, 11:14:36 AM »
Why are the meets starting times listed as Eastern?  Flo does the same thing and it makes absolutely no sense.  You are not based out East, nor is Flo.  Also, if you are going to change the dual meets starting times from Central to Eastern shouldn't you at least tell your viewers that?  Nowhere in the article does it let people know.

What is Zander Wick's status?  I didn't see him mentioned in the WI Early Look.

Any news on Connor Brown's future?

College / step-out rule
« on: March 26, 2019, 11:41:24 AM »
Earl says that a step-out rule will make reffing a lot easier.  But doesn't that depend upon determining the difference between a step-out and a push-out?  Hilger beat Stoll 1-0 and they went out of bounds at least 14 times.  Some would score this 14-1 Stoll while others would say it was a 15-0 tech for Hilger.  I think that a step-out rule just opens up a different can of worms from the current can of worms.

College / Venz-Wilcke match raises challenge review questions
« on: February 08, 2019, 01:42:31 PM »
I'll recap for those who haven't watched it.  Tied 2-2 Venz amasses 60 seconds riding time just as Wilcke escapes to take a 3-2 lead with 23 seconds left.
Tom Brands throws the brick at the scorers table challenging the riding time.  The ref (Sorochinsky?) allows the match to continue.  Venz doesn't know that he has riding time and tries a Hail Mary td to lose 5-2.
The ref asks the timer if the riding time is correct, picks up the brick, and doesn't review it.

1) Are reviews discretionary?  Can the ref decide not to review a coaches challenge?  Why wasn't the match stopped after the escape to review the challenge?
2) If the riding time challenge was reviewed and it was determined that the riding time clock was incorrect, would the clock have been adjusted and the match restarted with 23 seconds left and Wilcke holding a 3-2 lead?
3) Are riding time challenges different than other challenges?

Is Sam Stoll going to ride his 4-0 ranking into a #1 B1G seed?

Why is Cassar ranked ahead of Steveson?  Looking at your list Steveson has beaten the #4, 8, and 18, while Cassar has only beaten the #5 and 17.  If you are adding in Nevills (AA 5th, 7th) for Cassar then you must be adding in Hall (AA 3rd) for Steveson.
If you are looking at accomplishments outside of this year's college season then the ranking makes even less sense.  Explain yourself.

College / Earl's Final X thoughts
« on: June 26, 2018, 10:57:59 AM »
"From most accounts, the attendance in Lincoln was not great. In State College, it was better, but there was still plenty of empty space in both end zones."

JB posted:Attendance at the three #FinalX sites from what I've gathered
(no, I do not have the full breakdown of paid, comp, staff)

Lincoln: 2,916
State College: 2,783
Bethlehem: 995
Total: 6,694.

This jibes with my estimate of 2500-3000 at Devaney.

I think it stinks and cause more problems than it solves.  Are there any plans to poll the head coaches and get a consensus on their opinions?

College / Latest rankings

I'm curious as to why NC State backup hvy Michael Boykin is ranked #10?  The starter is Malik McDonald, 14-2 on the season including a win over Boykin at the Journeyman.

One might think that Boykin is ineligible until 2nd semester but he has already wrestled in an early dual and was dressed and on the bench at the Nebraska dual when McDonald started.

Glad to see Ed Giese get some recognition.  He and Mike McArthur were lightweight forces for Wally.

Joe Gonzalez is still active in wrestling and able to maintain his trim 118 lb fighting weight.

College / Wrestling records that may never be broken
« on: November 15, 2017, 10:47:59 AM »
Al Sears wrestled D11 from 1981-1985.  While SIUE is now D1, mixing his pin record into D1 records muddies the waters.  Also, SIUE lists his pin record as 112: http://www.siuecougars.com/sports/m-wrestl/archive/general

31-0  Alan Fried, Oklahoma State, 142, 1994

You overlooked an obvious first choice:  19 pins, Outstanding Wrestler NCAA, Hodge Trophy
31-0 Jayson Ness, Minny, 133, 2010
