College / Vote Wrestling for Favorite Undercovered Sport on ESPN Poll
« on: August 13, 2014, 10:31:44 PM »
They are running a vote now to see which sport is the most undercovered.  Wrestling is in 2nd place right behind Rugby at the moment.

College / Positive Effects of Sauna Use
« on: April 11, 2014, 12:55:28 AM »

Warning: long article, summary at the end

Warning 2: complete offseason topic

This is an interesting article on the benefits of Sauna use.  I hadn't realized the amount of research done on saunas, with much of it relatively recent (post 1997).  They are currently banned and ostracized in the college wrestling community, but most reasonable people realize they are not the death traps the NCAA has made them out to be.  Much of this research was not done on humans, but as the evidence of beneficial uses of saunas accumulates, does anyone think the NCAA will change their stance to become more lenient.  Gable has spoken of the weight-cutting rules as a pendulum, where it used to be completely allowed but eventually shifted to an almost stifling amount of rules.

When/what do you guys think it will take for the weight management rules to shift to a more moderate stance?  Or do you think the NCAA will strengthen the rules even more?  Which direction is best for the sport?

Mixed Martial Arts / UFC 171

This is a great card with a lot of wrestlers on it.  Jake Shields, Tyron Woodley, and Johnny Hendrix are all in competitive fights.  This is huge to see if Woodley is the real deal or more of a gatekeeper.

Mixed Martial Arts / Bradley vs. Marquez
« on: October 12, 2013, 06:39:57 PM »
I know this isn't MMA, but is anyone else excited for this fight tonight?  Bradley beating Marquez puts him in the top 10 p4p imo.  Marquez is looking for a title in his 5th weight class that could've been his if Pac beat Bradley in the judges' minds.  It will be interesting to see which Bradley shows up tonight, the boxer or the slugger that fought Provodnikov in the FOTY imo.  I think he'll come out and box and use the Mayweather blueprint.  Marquez is too good as a counterpuncher to brawl with.

Also a good amount of interesting stories on the undercard:

Orlando Cruz and Orland Salido are fighting for the WBO featherweight title.  Cruz is the first professional boxer to come out as gay while he was still fighting.  Prediction: Salido TKO Rd 6

Also 2x Olympic Champion Vasyl Lomenchenko is fighting on the undercard against a legitimate fighter in Jose Ramirez.  If Lomenchenko wins he is guaranteed a title shot in his next fight, the fastest pro title shot ever.  I've watched a couple of lomenchenko's fights, he is the real deal.  I think he wins by a wide decision tonight, if not a tko.

Mixed Martial Arts / Sounds like Askren is going to the UFC
« on: August 21, 2013, 04:23:09 PM »
From the article:

"If undefeated Ben Askren plans to sign with UFC, Bellator MMA won't stand in the welterweight's way.

"I don't think we're going to make an offer at this point," Bjorn Rebney, Bellator MMA chairman and CEO, told "So I don't see any reason to make anybody sit out.

UFC president Dana White confirmed his interest in speaking with Askren, a member of the 2008 U.S. men's Olympic freestyle wrestling team before entering MMA the next year."

Now we might get to see where Askren is compared to the best guys in the world.

Just know, if you put a pick in now, it does become official.  If you want to wait until next week, that is your prerogative.

If a fighter pulls out due to injury, or whatever unforeseen instance we may have, you will get his replacement fighter. --fuhr

Mixed Martial Arts / Grant out, Pettis vs. Henderson on UFC 164

Very lucky injury for the UFC to get the big money fight people want to see.  Maybe too lucky?

International / World Team Trials Predictions
« on: June 19, 2013, 09:27:50 PM »
There isn't much talk about probably the best U.S. Wrestling event of the year (talent wise).  Anyone have predictions.  Here is what probably won't happen since i'm predicting it.

55 kg- Hazewinkel over Blanc in 3

60 kg- Reece Humphrey over Stieber in 3

66 kg- Metcalf over Russel in 2

74 kg- Burroughs over Howe in 2

84kg- Gavin over Reader in 3

96 kg- Pendleton over Bergman in 3

120 kg- Dlagnev over Nelson in 2

Mixed Martial Arts / Michael Chandler

Just re-watched his fight with Eddie Alvarez.  He is the real deal and could probably challenge for a UFC title today.  Anyone know if he will ever get that chance?  He seems happy in Bellator and he is probably the new face of the company with King Mo losing, but he isn't going to face anyone better than Alvarez there.  He could gave great fights with Bendo, Pettis, Aldo, Edgar, Grant etc.  I hope he makes the move sooner rather than later, from a selfish fan perspective.

College / Matches to look forward to
« on: May 23, 2013, 05:35:56 PM »
Vais thread about locks got me thinking about the match-up between Stieber and Maple next year.  I don't think Stieber is the favorite, i'd put it at 50/50.  Maple was hardly tested this year, except maybe by Port.

Andrew Howe vs. Chris Perry is another one that I can't wait for.

Mixed Martial Arts / UFC 155
« on: December 30, 2012, 12:07:44 PM »
I only got to watch the last two fights live, but followed the rest.  Lauzon vs. Milller was one of the best fights of the year imo.  Lauzon is easily my favorite non-wrestler in MMA right now.  He always goes for the finish and just seems like he loves to fight.

Cain vs. Dos Santos did not go how i expected it, but once Cain landed the overhand right the fight was basically over.  Clinch work and wrestling in the next 4 rounds ensured that JDS would not get his cardio back.  JDS looked for that knockout uppercut a few times but didn't have the energy to land it with force.  I wanted Cain to stand in the middle and box in the last few rounds and look for the finish but still a very good fight.

Only downside to Cain winning is it may prevent Cormier from fighting for the title.  Unless of course he decides to drop down to Light Heavyweight where I think he would have a legitimate shot against Jones.

College / Second Half Weight Changes
« on: December 24, 2012, 12:06:27 PM »
Anyone know any guys who will be dropping or moving up a weight for the second half?  I know there have been rumors of Oliver to 141 and Kindig at 149.  Maybe someone in the Gambrall, Evans, Lofthouse group makes 165.  Seems theres always a few guys who change weights around this time.
