International / Time to revise the 10 point tech.
« on: March 27, 2021, 07:22:20 PM »
It was adopted when TDs were 1 point, and you really had to dominate an opponent to get one. Today, not so much. They need to be 15 points.

College / Annual Pick 'em Contest
« on: March 14, 2021, 01:17:48 PM »
Select 10 wrestlers, but all must be different weights, the first 8 picks must be seeded 1-8 the last 2 picks can be selected from any seed below 8, But only 1 wrestler per weight and each wieght must have 1 wrestler.

Tio illustrate here is mine (with seed #)
125 Lee (1)
133 RBY (2)
141 Red (8)
149 Berge (9)
157 Moore (10)
165 Lewis (4)
174 Starocci (3)
184 Poznanski (6)
197 Elam (7)
285 Cassioppi (5)

Perhaps it makes more sense if I list them by seeds

1 Lee
3 Starocci
4 Lewis
5 Cassioppi
6 Poznanski
7 Elam
8 Red
9 Berge
10 Moore

Berge & Moore have 9 & 10 seeds but that was just coincidence, As I said the last 2 pics just have to be seeded below 8 and be in different weights
Scoring will be by NCAA tournament rules.

There is ONE rule and ONE rule only.

No autopsy.... no foul.

College / Mark Zimmer RIP
« on: February 16, 2021, 03:58:28 PM »
The former DeSales High School wrestler who never lost a state tournament wrestling match finally succumbed to a fierce opponent.

Mark Zimmer, Ohio’s first four-time high school state champion, died Tuesday after a three-year fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The Lewis Center resident was 59.

Zimmer made history in 1979 when as a 119-pound DeSales senior he collected his fourth consecutive title, a feat never previously accomplished in Ohio and one achieved only twice before by other wrestlers across the nation.

Thirty wrestlers in Ohio have won four titles since Zimmer, who had only one close call in four trips to St. John Arena. As a sophomore he was almost pinned but escaped and rallied to win in the third period.

Zimmer, who went on to wrestle at Wisconsin and Oklahoma, told The Dispatch in 2019, “I was very lucky in life. Like Forrest Gump, I showed up at the right time and the right place.”

Michael Zimmer was more effusive with praise of his older brother.

“He was my hero,” Michael Zimmer said. “People didn’t mess with me, because Mark would knock the crap out of them. Mark was one of those guys you hear about — the quiet one in the corner you didn’t want to mess with.”

But Zimmer also had a tender side, his brother said.

“Mark sought out people who were not necessarily in the clique in high school. He would sit and listen to people, which was one of his greatest skills,” Michael Zimmer said. “He would tell me, ‘Everybody has a story they want to tell.’ There

are always kids on the outside. But not to him.”

Brenda Zimmer said she witnessed that trait many times from her husband of 37 years:

“Whenever he saw somebody who needed something, he tried to fill whatever that need was,” she said. “Everybody mattered to him. That’s the type of man he was.”

Zimmer was diagnosed with ALS in May 2018 after experiencing muscle spasms in his arms and legs. He knew the disease was incurable, but vowed to wrestle it to the end.

“We knew it was coming,” Brenda Zimmer said. “It’s been a hard, long battle against a horrible disease.”

College / Sasso v Yianni
« on: February 13, 2021, 03:38:18 PM »
It wont happen this year, but I would love to see it.  Id give Yianni a slight edge but Sasso is really slick and well positioned so I can see him giving Yianni a real difficult time.

Off-Topic / The Smiths
« on: February 09, 2021, 10:39:38 AM »
The Wrestling HOF has a podcast series called Etched in Stone. The new one is called "the Smiths". (If you have to ask which Smiths they are talking about you have reached TheOpenMat by mistake).

There are 7 series episodes and 4 bonus episodes. Its very interesting stuff and includes the LeRoy v Lewis/Gable controversy, John's world title run, Pat's 4X quest, OSU's probaation etc,

Im on episode 6 and its really fascinating.  Here are some links

(I do NOT recommend accessing this podcast through the NWHOF however as it paused everytiime my cell screen went off. But when I logged in through Sticher it worked fine)

College / Im confused on eligibility
« on: January 06, 2021, 06:16:07 PM »
So the NCAA says that seniors last year do not get the opportunity to compete in 4 NCAA trournaments thus get no additional year of eligability.... but if they were juniors last year, this year does not count against them and they willl have 4 NCAAstournaments to wrestle in.

In other words guys like Lee and Marinelli get four shots but guys like Hall and Vincenzo get screwed? Do I have that right?

Mixed Martial Arts / Imagine for a moment......

Imagine for a moment... a fighter in MMA that had never lost a college wrestling match and was never taken down, was a Olympic Silver Medalist (with a disputed loss) AND was a National Gold Glove champion!

Danny Hodge passed away yesterday.

My heart is heavy but eternally grateful for the tender time he spent with my son, as well as the not so tender time I spent with him one Sunday afternoon.

Off-Topic / Bob Stoops Returns!
« on: December 03, 2020, 03:56:41 PM »
COVID has hit the Sooner coaching staff pretty hard so Linoln Riley has talked Bob into coming back as a part time Assistant Coach.

A little known fact about Bob is that he loves Tiquila. Three years ago I was at a Toby Keith fundraiser for his Kids Corrall, (a home for parents while their kids are in the hospital nearby), and they were auctioning off various things and Keith asked who wants to bid on this chance to drink (some high priced) tequilia right there on the stage. A few bids go up $50... $75... when all of a sudden from the back of the room a bellowing I BID $2000! Everybody turns and looks at Bob who walks up takes the shot and walks right back out.

So as you watch this video keep an eye on the tequila.
