Okay, I'm not knocking the kid but Logan Steiber just placed top 3 in his weight at US nationals. Does that show just how weak our weights are now? I mean we have HS wrestlers placing higher than college wrestlers.

This can't be good for the US or is it?

What are his prior accomplishments?

Looks like Pataky and Sanders got worse at freestyle during this year in college.  Blanc, who sucked in college this year, did very well.

I believe he is a Fargo champ and HS champ.

I guess my point is if we have HS wrestlers placing higher than college or senior level wrestlers, we might have a problem.

Agree, the kid is a stud, but one has to wonder if our competition is in fact getting weaker.

If he beat Sanders, how come Sanders was the one competing overseas?

Steiber didn't compete in the trials.  I think he broke his arm, but I'm not sure.  Sanders beat David Taylor at the trials.

So we're going to have a nosepicker representing us around the world? Not good.

There are always some high schoolers that do well on the senior circut, so it's not totally a sign we're weak (regardless of whether anyone thinks we're weak or not, this is not the tell tale indicator).

Look at a guy like Jimmy Carr who made the Olympic FREESTYLE team at age 17.  If there were message boards back then, imagine how insane the hype over him would've been?  But I think he A/A'd one time..?  Damion Hahn - another guy who beat some guys when in high school and people were predicting same crap outta him and some jokers out there will tell you his career's been a disappointment.

Good observation. We do have talent that can shine early on. I remember Abas just out of HS doing really well at the WTC's in Vegas. Now here is what will happen. He has the smae potnetial as some kid from Russia, or any number of former Soviet Union sattelites, Iran, Turkey, and so on. But they will always concentrate on freestyle, and he will get his folkstyle skolarship. He will then become a student/athlete. He will have to work to pass classes. He will become part of a program. He will be very busy. There is nothing wrong with this path and senario. As a parent it is an ideal situation to send your child into.

However, having said all of this, it is why with the numbers we have, the resources we have, we cannot keep up internationally. It is a decisions we have made as a wrestling community. I can see the logic in all sides of that argument.

I'll have to say as unimpressed with international rules as I am, I'm glad guys don't skip over college. Freestyle used to be so superior, I can't believe what has happened to it. Athletes are better than ever, but the rules and officiating have killed it.
