ODU moves to C-USA, Impact on Wrestling
« on: May 17, 2012, 06:51:57 PM »
 :(
Is old dominion getting the chop due to the new conference? They are the only school with wrestling. It seems with the big push in football and the addition of more scholarships in that sport, that some other sports are going to suffer and get the chop.

I know the press release said they are looking for Confernces for the sports that CUSA does not sponsor. However you can't always trust what the athletic administration say.

Anyone have any inside info?

Is the team endowed? Good alumni support?

Am I just being a big baby or are my concerns legit??

Be a shame to see this team dropped especially after a decent year with 7 national qualifiers.

No inside info, but I think they will be just fine.

Athletic director wselig@odu.edu

A nicely written email to him may hold some answers and also show him there is support for the program.
Since Jammen has told me twice to change my signature, I can only assume his wrestling knowledge is no longer something I can count on along with pizza and beer.

Anytime there is a move to a conference that doesn't sponsor the sport, we should be worried about the program being dropped.

I wonder if JB would have any insight?
Imagine the good that could be done, if people were less worried about their differences, and more worried about doing good for everyone.

Im not sure writing AD's really mean much. I have wrote many many many emails to AD's.
They tell what they want, and arent always truthful.
If they want to drop, they will. They wont tell us for fear of backlash.
Anybody know Coach Martin well?

Here's what I can say publicly. I did talk to Martin for about 45 minutes about all the shifting and how it affects things.

ODU's top athletic donor is a wrestling alum and sits on the Board of Visitors. Wrestling is not going anywhere

Wrestling was partially funded and had no full time assistant prior to 2004-05. Now the program is fully funded, and has two full time assistant posts and a grad/volunteer asst position
The school just completed a new wrestling practice facility in the last two years.
A women's sport will not need to be added until 2016
41 of the 77 Division I programs are in all-sports conferences which do NOT sponsor wrestling, it's not exactly a death knell like some might (wrongly) assume. Steve asked I not discuss conference alignment but did emphasize the program won't get cut.

As an alum, thread titles like this are troublesome because people might not read the content, rather just the title and pass this off as a legit rumor. ODU won't cut wrestling, the school would lose too much money

So can we tweak that thread title? Because we aren't getting the axe

for some reason, i can't log into the admin side of things on the forums right now.

if i could, i'd either whack the thread or at least edit the title of it.

the program is in absolutely no danger.

I don't think whacking the thread is necessary. It was a legit question and discussion.

Thanks for the info Jason.

I don't think I was having a knee jerk reaction, but I get a little jumpy when it comes to D 1 programs because I have seen 3 cut here in California in the last 8 years. UC Davis, Fullerton St and Fresno St.

BTW....look how well that Fresno St Equestrian team is doing!!!!

I truly believe Dart would have rescued the program by himself had push come to shove .
You know, I think I would rather be a man than a god . We don't need anyone to believe in us. We just keep going anyhow. It's what we do.

I don't think it should be whacked, but for people coming to the site and they see that thread title, it's nowhere remotely accurate, even if you were asking a question.

Perhaps "ODU moves to C-USA, impact on wrestling" would be more legit, because that is exactly what the case is. I think the thread title is actually doing more harm than good, but that's from an ODU standpoint. As a vocal and active alum of the school, I think the title is more damaging than anything else, because framing the question implies there's a possibility, when in reality, there isn't one.

If you could tweak the thread title, I'm sure some people's issues (including my own) would be satisfied.

Sorry fellas, I crashed early last night,  thread title is changed.

just to note: im not a 'thread-whacking' kind a guy.

but titles such as that DO have negative consequences.

if there were a modicum of truth to it, no big deal.
