The question is whether a few months of vigilante action would rid the US of the filth?

no.

Filth is relative.

If you allowed vigilance, you would created fragmentation and warlordism.

You'd probably have a place where everyone who doesn't think like you do is killed off.  I'd have a zone where we killed off anyone who doesn't agree with me..etc.

When I envision vigilantism, what I see is the people against whom the crime was committed reaching out and reciprocating justice upon the offender. I dont see it as gangs of people walking around, popping off the bad guys/girls. If one were to kill a member of my family, and they were found guilty and sentenced to death, then I would take the 'justice' or sentence with my own hands

If the gov anounced that it was going to allow vigilante justice at this very instant what would happen?

Do you think gang members, drug dealers and such would be taken out?  Would you participate?

It would be an interesting experiment to say the least.
I'd participate.  Not a day goes by that gang member kills someone on the south side of Chicago.  The gangs are now moving to the suburbs with their drug money.  Let me tell you, repossessing three cars from a Gangster Disciple is no fun.  We even made the news on that one.  <_<

Wouldn't this add more of the problem for what this kind of "justice" is supposed to fight against?

Aren't a number of gangs in the US a product of vigilantism going too far?

I saw somewhere on some History Channel program that one of the major gangs in the US started as a "community organization that brought people of the neighborhood together to take back the streets".  This sounded like it started off as a group of vigilantees getting together to keep the criminals away, but then became criminals themselves...
David Barksdale and Larry Hoover are probably the guys you are talking about.  For all the good they did they did bad by 100 fold.  Here's a story on them:

So uh, no more takers on some casual vigilante action?

What if someone shot up a gang at some corner with a paint gun, the ones that are suped up to give you welts...

I wouldn't participate but I wouldn't be sad to see a mass grave of baby rapers on the news.
