Cadet nationals is for athletes that are 15 and 16 years old, not by grade.

Yes this is true. That said for the most part those are 9-10 grades.

That again is false, there are many aka about 50% of the athletes are a first year cadet as an 8th grader.

OK. I'll change the article when I can.

I don't know if I'd say half of the first-year cadets are eighth graders. I always thought the total number was actually much lower, maybe 15-20%.

Most states or school districts have an August 1st cut off for kindergarten. That would make it a 5 months would be first year as an 8th grader. Then add in where a good percentage of kids are held back that are born in June or July, it's easily very close to 50/50.

You're working on assumptions, not cold-hard facts. It's hard to get a firm answer from USAW, since I don't believe they keep "grade" data. It would take a complete effort to confirm either point of view. There isn't enough "hard" data to validate either way.

In my state's cadet folkstyle state finals the entry list has grades listed with the entries
7th-4
8th-96
9th-241
10th-89

432 entries which is a pretty good sample size.
