The Federales own massive amounts of land and that ownership may impinge on the rights of citizens. Calling a wasteland a National Park to stop resource development is wrong. On the other hand, Yellowstone is nice!

I've been to a number of national parks, but I've missed the wastelands. Which ones are those?

Badlands is a good example.  Been there, very different.  Grand Canyon is a waste land out there.  Not saying it shouldn't be a National Park.  But it is a wasteland.  But there is beauty is such ruggedness.   Mt. Rainier is nice, Yellowstone beautiful, Tetons awe inspiring.
