Pin king?
« on: May 11, 2017, 09:54:04 am »
Great work by Alex.  I'm looking forward to part 2.  I've always hoped that there would be an official site that maintained wrestling statistics. Here are the top career pin total list that is constantly evolving.  Except for the top two all the others have been verified by their schools.

01) 107 Gene Mills.................?
02) 106 Wade Schalles..........?

03) 94 Larry Bielenberg
04) 91 Ben Askren
05) 87 Howard Harris
t6) 76 Hudson Taylor
t6) 76 Dan Gable
t8) 73 Jayson Ness
t8) 73 Ed Banach
t8) 73 Dan Severn
11) 71 Stephen Neal
12) 69 Taylor Walsh
13) 68 Scott Moore
14) 67 Mike Land
t15) 66 Corey Olson
t15) 66 Len Kauffman
Hope springs eternal.

I've been following Alex as he put the work in on this and I can tell you that he delved as deep as he possibly could with the research.

Bruno Sammartino had well over 400 pins.  Used to work out with Pitt and Rex Peery.

I kept meaning to circle back to this.  I had Taylor with 70, but I don't remember where I got that.

Others to add with at least 66:
Al Sears, SIUE 110
Gary Albright, Nebraska 66
Jake Stork, Maryland 69
Mike Land, Iowa State 67
Sean Markey, Citadel 68
Kevin Vogel, Central Michigan 66
AJ Schopp, Edinboro 67

Hudson Taylor, Columbia bio

"He is tied for fifth in career pins in the all-time NCAA record books with 87.  At Maryland, he holds the school record for career pins (87), career wins (165), and pins in a single-season (24)."

http://www.gocolumbialions.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=204969087

87 includes his red shirt year.

   Won   Lost   Pins
2006   19   3   10   (Redshirt)

2007   29   10   16
2008   37   3   18
2009   38   8   19
2010   42   4   24
                 77   (87)

I am keeping Hudson Taylor at 76 pins for now.   Maryland has him listed as 15 pins in the 06-07 season, not the 16 listed on his Columbia Bio: http://www.umterps.com/ViewArticle.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=29700&ATCLID=208123050
But we are always in murky waters as Track Wrestling doesn't list college records for 06-07 season.
Hope springs eternal.

Sorry, I meant Chris Taylor with 70.  He only wrestled two years at Iowa State after going to a community college.  This had him as 87-0-1 as a Cyclone with 70 falls.

Pretty wide range of teams represented there. ISU and Oregon St boh well repersented. But only 1 Iowa and no Ok St names which is pretty surprising to me anyway.

Percentage of total bouts wrestled would make some interesting reranking.

21)  64 Jake Stork

Updated with corrections as some schools list 5 year pin totals in their record books.  Sean Markey had a single season high of 16 pins and yet is listed with an impossible 68 pin total.  Jake Stork had 64 pins in his  4 years of competition.  Vogel got 28 in one year to help him to his 66.
Hope springs eternal.
