We're talking about handheld computers.  You're making a decision about whether to use one based on what the cool or uncool kids look like with them?  That's junior high school reasoning.

Junior HS reasoning or a choice not to be distracted by the smart phone?  You are correct, it is a computer.  It is very rarely used as a phone.  I choose not to have one.  You apparently find that horrifying.  I'm really flattered by your concern but there is no need.  Believe it or not, you can be perfectly rational and not own a smart phone.  I feel there are more downsides to having a smart phone than not.

Others have done it too.

So again, thanks for the concern but I'm not getting one very soon.

We now have a discussion of this form:

Quote
A:  I don't own a cat, because the government uses them to spy on people.

B:  No they don't.  That's nuts.

A:  Cats scratch up the furniture!  Why do you want me to own a cat?  Look, here's a list of other people who don't own cats!

While I hate to withdraw the supposed flattery, why would I care if you get a smartphone?  Or if you like Santana?  You presented bad reasoning on both counts, and I criticized it.  If you have other, better reasons, that's great, but they need to leave your head and make it into print if you want them to be part of the conversation.  Had you said, "I don't have a smartphone because I don't want to be distracted, and I feel there are more downsides to having one than not", we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Well Ray, he did say, " I feel there are more downsides to having a smart phone than not."  That would be claiming it is his opinion.   ;D

He said that eventually, yes.  That's my point in quoting it.

why would I care if you get a smartphone?

I'm wondering the same thing.

But in keeping with the thread subject - Journey.

Yeah, I'm not surprised.  For the sake of having at least a little clarity:  I never said you should own one.  You probably shouldn't.

Yeah, I'm probably not smart enough to figure it out anyway.

There good a few applications other than calls and text messages.

GPS maps, much better at showing live traffic than the TomTom and others I've had.
Pandora -  I link the music to a blue tooth speaker and play wherever I'm working.  I just sign in to the local wi-fi.
Business email - I get 75-80, sometimes over 100 emails a day and when I get back after a day off ine I'm buried.  I have ,y business email through the phone which allows handling crises on the spot and not being buried when I get back.

In seriousness, I'm not trying to be condescending or insulting.  I do get frustrated when I can't make myself understood.  It doesn't seem that you got my point, but I'll count that as a failure of communication on my part.

As a fellow "old man" I can sympathize with this sentiment. For myself, Im pretty sure I'm only accessing a small fraction of my phone's potential. Im not on facebook, nor do I use it to listen to music, and I dont use it for e-mail. But I do have a business app that I use almost daily and the online mapping is a huge plus (did you know that smart phones can show you traffic jams and ways around them?) The instant internet access is both a practical tool and an entertainment tool. When I cant figure something out on it I call my son or ask someone under 40 and I almost always get my answer.

My wife asks one of our sons.  They are between 16 and 28.  She likes it and decided she is hooked on it for the ability to instant message people that she is working with.

A few other huge benefits to me which I failed to mention is the group texting and photo / video sharing.

Daily, one of my kids shares photo or video almost instantly. with the family through group text messaging.

I also do a lot of Facetime chatting with the grand kids. I also used Facetime to help my son repair his car.  He focused the camera on the problem and through live chatting and video we figured out the problem.

Business wise, I participate on audit teams which typical involves 3 or 4 working independently.  We share group tests posing questions and answers during the course of the audit, also sharing photos of certain situations that enable immediate feedback.
