That's why I turned to grunge.   To me it was real music.  So I listen to that and the classic rock stuff.

Several are on "ignore".   I won't argue with the ignorant and disrespectful..

You have to find the great lyricists who are basically modern poets

Common- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZRH68Ib1Ko

Nas- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCOURZ-yx4E

Eminem- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQRmA2v2D9s

Lupe Fiasco- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1Et1siZhTk

Talib Kweli- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtc9f2WBcKg

Rakim- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88BPk903jUQ

You don't understand Falcon.  I have a visceral hatred of Rap.  I can't stand it.  I'm more interested in the music, especially guitar oriented, but not exclusively so.  I am not so much interested in lyrics.  If so, I wouldn't like what I do.  But it has to be musical.  I find, in the rap i have listened to, including suffering through my kid's rap tastes, there is no musicality or very little.  I do not like it at all.  Grunge is not for everyone, but at least it was musical and a new thought musically.  It was the reaction to the hair bands of the 80's with their formulaic sound.

In fact I used the no musicality argument on my two older kids (both mid 20's now) and they looked at it and agreed.  Then it was shortly afterwards that they quit listening to it like they had.  Not that they turned to my music, but they got off of rap.

When I find lyrics that I find disgusting, I will not listen.  Rap does that more than what I care for.  I know the same can be said for Rock.  But I won't listen to material that calls women b****es and ni****ahs, and ho's.  I'm not interested in rap being authentic only because the rapper is a thug.  Sorry, I just don't find that kind of lyric enlightening.

Well I intentionally picked lyricists who don't rap about that "rah I'm a tough thug listen to me" nonsense because it annoys me as well, especially when my students quote lyrics at me in an attempt to appear "hard" which fails with me because I've taught actual "thugs" before. However assuming that rap is only that is the same thing as assuming rock is only sexual innuendo.

My main musical tastes are very lyrics orientated such as punk and folk so lyrics holds a strong importance to me, I'm also tone deaf so I lose the appreciation of great feats of musical playing. What bothers me about a certain collection of rock artists is very little variation in what or how they play their music. Of course country is far worse than that, there is virtually no variation in pop country.
