The Iranian wrestler was in the U23 and was winning over the Russian when his coach commanded him to loose. (watch the video) so that he would not face an Israeli in the next match.

He refused at first... then looking confused and unprepared returned to the mat from out of bounds, gets taken down and then leg laced for 10 or so points losing the match.

He was clearly upset later and questioned the mindset that made him lose.

The wrestling authority there supports this charade as of course does the government.

Throwing matches by any country for ANY reason should be sufficient grounds for banning that nation from further events until they show they are ready to compete with ANY challenger.

As much as they hate Israel, you would think they would relish the chance to beat up an Israeli athlete.  Then again, who knows what his government would do to him and his family if he lost to an Israeli.

Are you saying this wrestler should be suspended or the team or the coaches?  The wrestler didn't have much choice really.  He'd have to defect rather than go back home.  I say if that is the way they want to play this game, pair them up with an Israeli in the first round of every tourney.  That way  the Iranians would no longer be world beaters unless they changed their mind and thrashed the Israeli's.

What would happen if some Russian wrestled for Israel like they do for other countries.  Would the Iranians still drop a match?

Clearly the wrestler is a victim here. Given the legitimate fear of disobeying his government and his obvious reactions, he should get a pass.

The UWW needs to take a strong stand here and ban the Iranians until they agree to compete against any all all competitors.

The UWW will probably disallow any Israeli competitors.  That'll show 'em.

That would be typical for international bodies it seems.

Looks like UWW is looking into it now.

They better do more than just a wrist slap.

The US should not invite Iran to the World Cup.

I'm not sure the US has much influence on that.

Given the stance, why would they not forfeit at the start like they hive in the past?  Was the Israeli bout going on simultaneously and there was a chance the ensuing bout would not occur?
