Legitimate finalists next season by team.
« on: March 18, 2018, 03:44:39 PM »
Since it looks like finalists have been carrying the champion lately rather than racking up consolation points, I thought it would be fun to speculate about next season. Here is who I see as legitimate potential finalists for the top teams next season. Legitimate doesn't mean favorite, but a realistic chance. I'll put "favored" in parentheses for the guys who I think are favored to make the finals (not necessarily win it) at this point.

Iowa: 6
125: Lee (favored)
149: Lugo (this weight will be interesting to watch next year... lots of question marks)
157: Kemerer (favored)
165: Marinelli (I think this is the craziest weight next year. No clear favorite, and not because the weight is down like 197, but because there are a handful of elites that can beat each other on any given day)
197: Warner
HWT: Stoll (favored)

Other AA threats: Murin at 141, Wilcke at 184 (I'm not as high on Young at 174 as others... he couldn't get by Gunther this year...)

tOSU: 6
133: Pletcher
141: Mckenna (favored)
149: Hayes
157: Jordan
184: Martin (favored)
197: Moore (favored)

Other AA threats: 165: Campbell

PSU: 7
141: Lee (He is only going to get better, and his chance is better if Yianni bumps up)
157: Nolf (favored)
165: Joseph (favored)
174: Hall (favored)
184: Nickal (favored)
197: Rasheed/Casser
HWT: Nevills (favored)

Other AA threats: Teasedale/RBY at 133, Verkleeren/Berge at 149 (No idea about Berge's weight)

I'm not going to try with Oklahoma State, but they have a lot of potential All Americans with Picc, Fix, Brock, Gfeller, Lewallen, Smith, Rogers, Smith, Weigel, and White. THey could potentially bump some guys up and have that be their lineup, otherwise someone between Picc and Lewallen will be sitting out.

I don't think Iowa gets 6, PSU 7, or tOSU 6, but it isn't an unreasonable possibility for either of them to achieve it. PSU will be the clear favorite, but a few upsets and a stellar tournament by Iowa and the team race will be interesting.
I am the way, the truth, and the life.

Chalk that one up to slow thinking. 😊
