Breakdancing at '24 Games
« on: December 08, 2020, 08:16:21 AM »
Breakdancing became an official Olympic sport on Monday. Also confirmed for Paris by the IOC executive board were skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing.

Two sports with troubled governing bodies - weightlifting and wrestling - saw the biggest cuts to the number of athletes they can have in Paris. Both sports could be dropped entirely due to historic doping problems.
We are the storm.

The Olympics needs a new governing body.

Olympics haven't been relevant in a long time.

They started going downhill when NBC got the broadcast rights and decided to have a zillion "up close and personal" interviews to appeal to women viewers.

Paris will have the same number of wrestlers, 288, and medals, 18 sets, as Tokyo.

Olympics haven't been relevant in a long time.

Olympic wrestling remains highly relevant to the wrestlers and fans.  Talk to any wrestler, from the US to Iran, and the Olympic medal remains the #1 goal.

True but honestly I don't know why?  So many trash sports that are now part of the Olympics.  Seems to me a World medal is far more meaningful.

Maybe every 4 years wrestling could give a double gold medal or twice the size or way more prize money or something.   Is the doping an international thing or mainly Russian?   I don't keep up on doping per se but I don't remember it having a huge effect on wrestling recently.

Breakdancing over rhythmic gymnastics or synchronized swimming anyone?

The last two are the "pretty sports" that my wife likes, so NBC isn't going to cut anything that appeals to women.

So is NBC the new IOC?   I thought it was the IOC that decided what sports are Olympic  Needless to say they are nice to watch, but does that rise to the the level of real sporting competition?  My opinion is that it does not.

For the record, I"m against adding breakdancing, skateboarding, etc.   I also don't like Tennis or Soccer in the Olympics.   They have their own competitions that mean more to them than the Olympics.  No one is going to tell me that a soccer team is going to work harder for an Olympic medal than a World Cup medal.    No way.

NBC supplies the money, so the IOC listens.

So break dancing will be air at 9 PM while we get to watch wrestling  at 3 AM.

I always thought one of the Olympic criteria was global opportunity to participate in a sport.  So much for Kenyans break dancing and surfing.
