Title: Big 10 Pick'em
Post by: brycemus on March 05, 2013, 11:48:59 AM
Same shit different day ... do a Big 10 pick'em based off the pre-seeds?  I know it's imperfect because things could change in the official seeding meeting, but it's tough to get all the picks in 12 hours before the actual tourney starts.  I'm thinking select 1-8 and two 9+ or unseeded guys.  can't double up weights or seeds, you guys know the drill.  Anyone else in?
here's the link for the preseeds.

I plan to beat you like I always do.  Where is that vveto guy who usually runs this thing?

I have no idea ... I was hoping this would make him show up so that I wouldn't have to run it.  I mean I can, but it will be difficult since I will be drunk all weekend in NoDak

You beat me to it.  I'll score the contest.

Your fantasy team must consist of:

*  Ten wrestlers
*  One wrestler per weight class
*  One wrestler for each of the pre-seed positions, 1 through 8
*  Two wrestlers with a pre-seed position 9 or lower, or unseeded
*  Actual team points scored by your wrestlers throughout the tournament are credited to your fantasy team.

Post your picks in this thread, and please list them in ascending order starting with 125.

Based on preseeds?  Will anything change when seeds come out on Friday?

This was incredibly hard for me as I wanted to pick some Hawkeyes, but I honestly don't know that any of them finish above their seed.  I ended up choosing one, and I can almost guarantee he doesn't finish ahead of his seed...but I couldn't have a Big 10 team without a Hawkeye.

Nagel is at 133 rather than 141

Ac1998
McClure is a #5 pre-seed rather than a #6

Tavanello and Tessari won't be wrestling
If you selected either and don't revise your picks, I'll assign the substitute wrestler (Karageorge, Paddock) to your team.

So the only one who picked anyone named "Stieber" to win was buckgrad80, atOSU guy who picked the entire tOSU line up to win it. No one else even mentioned a Stieber. All I can conclude is that the wrestling IQ of this group is lacking. Have none of you paid attention this year at all? hmmm?

When you can only pick one #1 and you have guys like Ed Ruth and David Taylor it isn't overly surprising.  If this were a contest to pick the winners, I'm sure both Steibers would have been on most lists, but this contest is about identifying value.

AND APPARENTLY I SUCK AT IT!

While I would admit to being a bit of a homer for tOSU, I would disagree with the previous statement made by Okie!

The NCAA Most Dominant Award calculation has been led by Logan Stieber all year. - Why would you have not wanted to pick him as your #1 instead of a David Taylor or Ed Ruth.

In my estimation, Logan Stieber was most likely to pin all of his competition, except for Ramos, and thus generate the most points for your team.

Now granted, all three are NCAA champs, but I picked Logan because he had the most bonus point potential and I felt like he was a lock to repeat as champ at 133 :).

Joint Doc:

For the record, all of those tOSU guys I picked met or exceeded their seeds, except two. - Campo was seeded 4th and got 5th, and while I had picked Tavenello as a 10th seed (who would have done awesome, but was scratched to protect his red-shirt) Kosta K replaced him and didn't win a match as a backup in probably the toughest and deepest class of the tournament.

When you need to take a reach with a lower seed, I tend to go with the ones I know that have a little more than they might have shown.

Let's face it, all of these Big Ten teams beat up on each other all year, and many of them are much better than their records might show on the surface. But when you are facing the best in the country night in, and night out, you are going to absorb some tough losses.

Obviously, as I chose him, I think Ruth was the pick simply because of the presence of Ramos (and the fact that Dardanes was available as a #7 at that weight).  I also didn't see Steiber as the kind of lock Ruth was (again, because of Ramos).  Ramos is damn good and you never know what can change in a year.  It was close.  That is for sure.  I would have liked to have any of them on my team, but choices had to be made.

AND I MADE ALL THE WRONG ONES!
Title: Re: Big 10 Pick'em
Post by: brycemus on March 11, 2013, 11:02:51 AM
I took Dardanes because I knew there was NO way he was gonna do worse than 4th as a 7 seed. It was that simple. That meant Striebler was not an option for me. That left me choosing between Ruth & Taylor and I am sorry but I really dislike Ruth.

Post by: buf87 on March 11, 2013, 11:22:17 AM
I look at 133 and there are lots of great options below Steiber and I wasn't close to 100% sure he would beat Ramos.  I went with Graff at #3.

My #1 seed was Taylor, who I thought was the highest percentage to win.

Tough tourney, because you have to find underseeded guys.

Uhh, Taylor had a much worse field?  He was the best choice based on his bonus points, so Id settle down. The match went to OT, it wasnt near the lock Taylor was.   Plus it was pretty silly to not take advantage of Dardanes at 7.

For the No. 1 pick.....which had the best chance of being upset?  Taylor Ruth? or Steiber vs Ramos.  Ramos had the best shot at an upset and almost pulled it off.  Same with Delgado....best shot at taking down Megalion and McDuffy especially since he's buried McDuffy before.

Delgado gets the No 1 seed in two weeks for sure.

Delgado does NOT get the #1 seed over an undefeated Waters who beat McD ... wait did Waters lose last weekend too?  then maybe Delgado gets a 1

I guess I didn't really understand the nature of the contest (not to be confused with "The Contest", a la Seinfeld). At any rate, Nationals coming up NEXT WEEK!!!
