I saw that to.  One of those mats does not have a designation.  I'm guessing that that is #8.

Returning Champ Mehka Lewis 8-2 is seeded No. 4 with an at-large invitation.

Lost to Jake Wentzel PITT by injury default in his last dual bout, then med forfeited out of the ACC Championship.

He's aligned with #1 Marinelli for the semi-final

#2 is Valencia Arizona State
#3 is  Wentzel PITT

Any predictions for Valencia of ASU.   I think he tanks by the semi's.  He has promise when recruited but has never lived up to it.  I just don't see him as a legit #2.  I think he AA's.  It would be nice for him to be successful but he has been erratic over the last few years.

That's probably pretty close.  We had a kid in our high school that wrestled for ASU.  Was good friends with Zahid, not so much with Anthony.  Anthony is a very good wrestler, but not consistent and I don't think deserves #2 unless he greatly improved this year.

1st round is almost done.

One huge upset is at 197, #2 Eric Schultz of NEB pinned by #31 Owen Pentz of NDSU.

This is the only 1-4 seed that lost in the first round.  So no other major upsets.

Iowa, Penn St, Mizzou are 1-2-3 in the team race so far.

For those who haven't watched and are wondering about possible replays during the day, COVID has caused a change in the wrestling sessions.  They wrestle the first five weights, then take a break and clean the mats before wrestling the last five weights.  That's why ESPN broadcasts wrestling for two hours, takes a one hour break and then broadcasts wrestling for two hours (at least for the two rounds wrestled today).

I was wondering why ESPNU went off the air at 157. I went to the Rutgers twitter feed to find out it was restarting at 2.

Penn State pulled 7 bouts with bonus points.  Lost at 165 and squeezed in an upset over OHSU at 125, 4 TFs and 3 Ms.

Second Round

125  All four top seeds won, Lee of Iowa 15-5.    All 8 top seeds won except #8 lost to #9.

133  Fix pinned his guy and Desanto won with a pin also.  Only through half the bracket so far.

Getting all this from the brackets, not watching it.

Second Round

All 133 top 8 seeds won except for for #7 Bird of Illinois.  He was beat out by #10 Hayes of UVA

At 141 Eierman wins 5-3 against #16 Matthews of PITT.   It might be a tough tourney for him if he is having troubles so early on.

Second Round

141 is mixing it up a bit.

#21 Woods of Stanford wins his first two matches and is in the quarters.  That would be an upset I'm thinking.  He just beat #5 Demas of OU.
#9 Simon of CMU is in the quarters after beating #8 Red of NEB in the second round.
#7 Parker of ISU lost in the first round  to  #26 Valdivies of NW.
#10 Sherman of UNC just beat #26 Valdivies of NW
#2 Nick Lee picked up a Tech Fall and a Major

So the winners bracket is a good mix of folks.

Second Round

And that Boo match was a three round overtime match.  So he's still in.

#1 Sasso def #17 Park 11-10
#25 Thomas def  #9 Lamer 10-4
#12 Murin def  #5 Lovett 5-3
#4 Lewallin def #20 Heil 7-6 in triple OT
#3 Mauller def #14 Blockhus  4-2
#6 Andonian def #11 Storr 10-7
#7 Milner def #23 Lara 9-8
#2 O'Connor def #15 Parriot  8-3

So #25 and #12 in the quarters is pretty cool.  But there were some really close matches here with big differences in seed including Sasso, Boo, Mauller, and Milner.

Second Round - 157

#1 Deakin def #17 Vandermeere 4-2
#12 Berge def #5 Young 3-2
#4 Dellavechia def #13 Willits 4-2
#3 Carr def #14 Lewan  10-2
#6 Lee def #11 Teemer 4-3
#2 Hidlay def #18 DeVos 20-3
#8 Franek def #9 Coleman Injury default at 6:30.
#23 Wright def # 26 Lovett  2-1 OT

#23 Wright of WY has done really well, with a very tough second round match.  #12 Berge is also in the Quarters.

I think we are at the break for mat cleaning.   They probably should have been doing this all along.

If I were ruling that match, I would give Boo the loss. The only excuse for doing those 7 seconds over is that it's what the rule book says to do in case of a clock failure, according to the rules official who gave an explanation after the match. But I have to give Boo some credit for getting a 6-second takedown after getting his second chance. I don't blame the Campbell coaches for being pissed.

The Flo guys put it to a stop watch and they said the original time was 5 seconds. If the Flo guys can use a stop watch why cant the NCAA?

An alternative to the mat clock is not published in the rule book per the head of officials.  The mat clock you see is the only clock used.

I am sure it will be raised in the off season discussions.

I was surprised Campbell wasn't dinged for backing up and out on the first restart.  Then again, he would have been saved by the clock failure.

3rd session

Got some upsets.  Semi's are set.  UVU has two in the semi's, only the 3rd and 4th AA in their history.  Perhaps they are getting better at recruiting and growth.

I will only highlight the surprises here (anyone not top 4 seed):

125  #7 Lamont of UVU
133  None
141  None
149  None
157  None
165  #8 Griffith takes out #1 Marinelli 3-1.  #5 Hartman takes out #4 Mehki (medical forfeit).  #7 Smith takes out #2 Valencia 13-4.   So only 1 in top four in the semi's.  Wide open this weight!
174  #12 Truax takes out #4 Labriola 4-2.
184  #6 Poznanski takes out #3 Deprez 8-4
197 #26 Woodley takes out #15 Beard 8-3, #6 Bonacorsi takes out #3 Norfleet 4-1,
285  #5 Cassiopi takes out #4 Schultz 4-1, #6 Gremel deg #14 Hilger 2-1.

Some surprises here for sure.

Not a big year for upsets so far.

There've been some interesting upsets so far today. It can't be too common to have the 8-seed beat the 1-seed to face the 5-seed in a semifinal missing both the 1-seed and 2-seed (see Champ 165 bracket). Or to have the 12-seed beat both the 5-seed and the 4-seed to reach the semifinal (Champ 174 bracket). Or to have the 26-seed make it to the semifinal, with help from the 31-seed who pinned the 2-seed (Champ 197 bracket).

I got excited when I watched the 29-seed knock off the 3-seed and then pin the 11-seed in his next bout (Consi 285 bracket).

Vise and I are both hoping for at least one more upset in the semifinals tonight at 197.

Sorry Vise, your guy Woodly lost 1-4 to #6 Bonaccorsi (PITT). But he will finish at least 6th, not bad for a #26 who will end up as the Sooners' only AA.

My guy Ferrari pulled off the upset 5-1 over #1 Amine (MICH).

Wyatt Sheets lost 4-13 to #11 Teemer (ASU) and will wrestle for 7th place tomorrow.

Who knows what might happen if OkState wins all its placement and finals matches, and Iowa and Penn State lose all theirs? Don't tell me it's impossible. What if Spencer Lee doesn't make weight...

I hear he is a CPA in Deadwater. (John Smith evidently runs an employment agency specializing in the fathers of All American hjgh school wrestlers).

He missed his calling. He could have had a long and profitable career as a actor playing mafia hit men or psychopaths.

Iowa #1 seeds are tanking.  It looks like it is left to Spencer Lee to pull out a championship.  Apparently he is going last or something because I cannot find a result for him.

PSU on the other hand just about to get their 3rd champ.

They altered the line-up, Lee is last.  Don't know why since it will probably the least competitive.

What was your take on the tournament? I thought ESPN did a good job with the coverage. I had a TV next to my laptop so I could watch the TV broadcasts and bring up two ESPN+ streams, to get a page with the multiview of all eight mats, and another page with the individual bout I wanted to watch at the time. I also had a page with Trackwrestling so I could keep up with the scoring and brackets. I got a lot of enjoyment out of all three days of the action.

I had seen a few projections with OkState getting a 6th place team finish, and I was hoping they would do better. My only reason for pessimism was mspart's analysis of the Big 12 tournament, and his suggestion that OkState's wrestlers have trouble wrestling up to their seeds. I wanted to see how that worked out this time, and came up with the following:

          Seed    Finish
125     #21     DNP, lost to #12 and #19
133     #1      #2
149     #4      #4
157     #33     #8
165     #10     #4
174     #18     DNP, lost to #2 and #16
184     #11     #5
197     #4      #1
285     #29     DNP, lost to #4 and #9

The way I figure it, the only failure to wrestle up to seed was at 133. But Fix's 21.0 team points were a major contributor to the satisfaction I got from seeing OkState finish in 3rd place. I was also relieved that the only wrestler I heard about getting punished for bad language was not one of OkState's guys.

I hope everyone enjoyed watching the tournament as much as I did. I would be happy for anyone else to post a seeding performance chart like mine for their favorite team.

Ferrari's dad was on the screen for about 4 seconds during the match, and about 10 seconds afterward when Ferrari ran up into the stands and hugged him. Sorry, I didn't pay any attention to his attire. Maybe he'll show up at the medal ceremony and you can see him then.

You missed 4 PSU guys wrestling Oklahoma State style to win individual titles, support for Stanford wrestling, Ferrari bleeding again, Gable being way better than anybody else, and Spencer Lee revealing in the post match interview that he tore his ACL in the 2nd period vs. Mueller in the 2019 finals, and then dominated two seasons of NCAA wrestling and Sr. Nationals with a torn ACL. Then he tore his other ACL a couple weeks ago and claimed that he can now barely wrestle, but still outscored his opponents 58-8 on his way to another national title, and then saying he didn't say anything until now because "excuses are for wusses" and he didn't want to use it as an excuse if he happened to lose. Pretty stale wrestling overall though. Not really a single match I'd call exciting.

Ferrari bleeding again,

A dehydration bleed for sure.  Notice he didn't break a sweat, it wasn't because of an easy bout. He also said his walk around is 220-225 and will moving to heavyweight at some point. Good luck, better be prepared for Steveson to be around 3 more years.

Eireman gassed in the third and deflated in OT.  It was one of the worst bouts I've seen him wrestle.  Lee took him totally out of his game.  By the way did you notice a bit the Retherford style in Lee.

It looked to me like Penn St at has Iowa intimidated. Eireman & Kemerer looked mentally and physically exhausted at the end of those matches. I KNOW Iowa is not out of shape. So it had to be mental.

I assume Eireman will be back but will Kemerer? I hope so.

What are the odds the entire Iowa roster is back. I can't imagine Marinelli and Eireman not coming back.

How about Fix.  2 shots in the finals and 2 OT losses  Was Fix intimidated also?  He didn't wrestle half the match he had against Surianno.  He's another that just pooped out at the end.  Frozen on his knees as RBY scooted around and grabbed an ankle.

Eierman & Marinelli both announced via twitter they are coming back. My question is, does Kemerer come back for what seems like his 10th year?

Patrick McKee of MN took the longest path to 3rd.  He won his very first match, lost the next, and then won everything all the way to third.

Another of note is at 149 where Seed 26 took 3rd,  I'd say he wrestled above his seed and then some.  He made it to the quarters where he lost to Sasso, but then went on and took 3rd.  Huge effort there.

I have not done an analysis of who wrestle above and below their seed, but I think PSU probably did the best in that department with 3 champs.

Surprising result for me.

Iowa - 2 Even to seed, 3 above seed, 5 below seed.

PSU - 2 even to seed, 6 above seed, 1 below seed

OKST - 2 even to seed, 5 above seed, 1 below seed

So Tom Brands, even though the team trophy is his, is not happy with his team's performance I'm guessing.  Cael on the other hand is probably pretty happy with his team, and John Smith I would say would be pretty happy also.

OKST - 2 even to seed, 5 above seed, 1 below seed

I only worked it out for OKST, and I had them with 1 below (133), 1 even (149), and 7 above (their other 7 weights).  Maybe we used different definitions. Which weight did you have even besides 149, and at which one of their weights did you not have a seeding result?
Title: Re: Div I Championships on the Tube
Post by: mspart on March 22, 2021, 03:18:30 PM
It's possible I have it wrong.  I did it quickly.   Here is what I have for Okie ST.

133 Fix - Below seed
149 Boo - Even
157 Sheets Above (related to Mike Sheets?)
165 Whitlike Above
174 Plott - Even
184 Geer  Above
197 Ferrari  Above
285 Harris  Above

Fortunately for Iowa, those that went below seed, did not fall very far so they maintained their lead, but still Tom is a bit upset I'll bet.

Maybe we used different definitions.

The definition is obvious for a wrestler who placed. I hadn't heard of a standard definition for wrestling above seed for one who didn't place, so I made up my own definition. I said he wrestled above seed if his two losses were to wrestlers seeded better than him.

I just thought about it some more and decided a better definition would require him also to beat at least one opponent he was supposed to lose to. By that definition, OKST had 2 even, 6 above, 1 below.

mspart left out 125 Mastrogiovanni  Above

Post by: mspart on March 22, 2021, 04:11:12 PM
That's a fair way to do it.

I decided if a guy was seeded at 23 and lost his first  two matches, he's one of the first 8 to go.  With 32 seeds, that would be the 24-32 seeds should be the first to go.  So he wrestled below seed.

If a guy was ranked 12 and finished just shy of AA, then I said that was even because he would have been in the 9-12 finishing range.

If a 15 seed lost 2 straight, below seed.  If he won one and lost 2, below seed because he's going out with the 16 worst seeds.  If he lost, then won 2 and lost, even.   I hope that makes sense.

The way the bracket is set up, first people to lose 2 are 8 wrestlers.   Then next set is another 8, then 4 then 4, and then you have the top 8.

I just saw your revised post.   Indeed I did miss Mastro, I looked for OKST and did not see it at 125, but there he is and was above his seed for sure.   That's why you are the rocket scientist and I'm not.

Just go to Trackwrestling.com, go to Events, go to Search events, put in NCAA for the name and last week for the time and it should be there.

Any predictions for Valencia of ASU.   I think he tanks by the semi's.  He has promise when recruited but has never lived up to it.  I just don't see him as a legit #2.  I think he AA's.  It would be nice for him to be successful but he has been erratic over the last few years.

Yes, you heard it here first.   I predicted that he would tank.  From #2 to #8 and didn't even fight for #7, forfeited out.

Ahem, they are not available because Flo doesn't want them to be available.  Track used to update the brackets after each bout including consolations. Flo never activated the consolations tab. Clear evidence how they are going to try and migrate it all to their website and block access if no fee is paid.

I understand some people's resentments against Flo. And I also understand not wanting to give one thin $0.10 to someone who I think has screwed me some way or is dishonest in general. (Tyson Foods). But their content is just outstanding and frankly has been a huge boon to amateur wrestling in general. I guess what Im really asking here is... Is your anger against Flo greater than your desire to watch the sport you love on a fairly regular basis?

I'd say that is a testament to how good of a team Tom built. Having a #1 seed go down early to injury and barely score any points, and then 4 other guys not wrestle to seed, all while the #2 team does about as good as they possibly could do, and still win by over 15. I think Tom's got to be feeling pretty darn good about a repeat next year. Even if Lee redshirts to nurse the injury, Marinelli + Ayala would probably score equally if not more than Marinelli + Lee did this year. Plus, we have to hope Assad's knee is repaired for next season and he can score more than the couple points Brands brought home.
