Wrestlingref - Officiating / Rules Interpretation
« on: February 05, 2015, 09:48:21 AM »
What would happen in a match if Wrestler "A" committed a false-start and got a caution, but his actions caused Wrestler "B" to become injured and he couldn't continue the match- even though the cause of the injury was completely legal Such as:

From Neutral- Wrestler "A" tries to time the whistle and takes a quick low-single and hyperextends his opponent's knee
From Bottom- Wrestler "A" tries to time the whistle and does a fast, hard stand up and accidentally headbutts his opponent, breaking his nose
From Top- Wrestler "A" tries to time the whistle and does an arm-chop breakdown hyperextending his opponent's elbow.

In all of these instances, the maneuver that wrestler "A" is doing is a legal move, but it happens before the whistle blows and results in injury.

Does Wrestler "A" become disqualified or does wrestler "B" have to injury default if he cannot continue?

High School & Lower / ND duals
« on: February 03, 2014, 01:29:12 AM »
Saw 2 different oddities this past weekend in North Dakota- state dual Qualifying tournaments were happening.

Carrington 84, larimore 0

Largest possible margin of victory.

And...

Velva 12, new Town 9

9 double forfeits. 21 total pts in a dual. (1.5 pts/weight class)

High School & Lower / Tie-breaker for team standings

Scenario- Top 2 teams in Regional team-standings qualify for state duals

Team A- 6-0
Team B- 4-2 (Lost to Team A and C)
Team C- 4-2 (Lost to Team A and D)
Team D- 4-2 (Lost to team A and B)

Team E- 2-4
Team F- 1-5
Team G- 0-6

How would you separate Teams B, C, & D to determine who the 2nd team is?

High School & Lower / Wrestling stickers
« on: September 14, 2013, 08:02:34 PM »
When school started this fall some stickers were found in an office while cleaning. They were award stickers for wrestlers with different designs for decisions, major decisions, technical falls, and pinfalls. They were maybe .75 inches X .5 inches in size. I think they are really cool and plan to use them this year, but there were not a whole lot of some of them.

My question is, has anyone on here seen anything like these before or know where I might be able to buy more without having to custom design them? I haven't had a whole lot of luck with internet searches. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

International / Competing in both styles?
« on: July 01, 2013, 12:03:12 AM »
Could it be possible for wrestlers to compete in both styles? Could we, as a country, make it easier or possible for this to be a reality for our athletes? World Team Trials was an awesome wrestling event, but what if we separated the team trials be a few weeks for Greco and Freestyle. Worlds aren't until September so it wouldn't be the end of the world for one of the two styles to have their team trials 2 weeks later or earlier.

I really don't know how the freestylers would stack up against the greco guys or vice versa, but wouldn't it be awesome to see Dake, Paulson, Howe, Taylor, Marable, etc. have their crack at a world team birth in Greco. Maybe two of them would be on a world team instead of beating the snot out of each other in Freestyle and only one of them making it. Admittedly I don't follow the international styles as much as I do high school and college wrestling, but the guys at 74 KG Freestyle were all superstars and I have barely heard of some of the greco guys at that weight. Maybe Andy Bisek wipes the mat with those other guys in Greco since that's his style, (Not trying to take a pot-shot at Bisek, he's just not as main-stream as the others I listed) but I have to think that just the opportunity for them to compete is going to make Bisek that much better for having that much more competition gunning for his World Team spot... I'd love to see Ryan Mango mix it up in Freestyle or Tyrell Fortune mix it up in Greco. This just isn't doable when both styles are being contested the same weekend.

What are your thoughts on this?

Wrestlingref - Officiating / Stalling question
« on: February 18, 2013, 01:15:50 PM »
Had a situation at the state tournament this past weekend. Our wrestler locked up a two-on-one tilt with about 15 seconds to go in the match. the ref counted a 5-count, but then apparently the wrestler's back was no longer exposed to the mat. Since we still had the hold applied, but not in a near-fall position the ref did not award backpoints. After a few seconds the ref blew the whistle and simultaneously awarded 3-near fall points and gave our wrestler a stalling warning.

My question is, in this situation, when does a wrestler know when he needs to break the hold and improve his position if no nearfall points have been awarded? The wrestler in the hold was near a 90 degree position with his back so it was hard to know we were no longer in a near-fall situation.

High School & Lower / New Rankings
« on: October 31, 2012, 01:16:58 PM »
Pre-Season Rankings at 160 had the following:
#8- Peppleman
#12- Schleifer
#14- Blees

SUPER 32 RESULTS:
Blees beats Peppleman 11-7
Schleifer beats Blees twice 6-3 and 6-5

New Rankings at 160 have the following
#8- Peppleman
#12- Schleifer
#14- Blees

What is the point of releasing updated rankings if they are not going to change even though head to head results suggest that maybe they should?

International / Joe Schumacher's wrestling trip to Mongolia
« on: October 31, 2012, 09:05:37 AM »
Here's an interesting read about Joe Schumacher from Bismarck, ND (4X State Champion, Fargo Greco Jr. Champion) who went overseas and trained in Mongolia, Russia, and China after  high school.

Check it out here:

High School & Lower / Using iPads for Stats
« on: October 08, 2012, 04:24:33 PM »
Perhaps someone on here can give me some help. Maybe I'm dreaming this up, but I'm almost positive that someone last year showed me that they had an application for their iPads that allowed their statisticians to use them to video record the matches and keep the stats simultaneously.

Any help would be appreciated.

International / Cadet/Junior Dual Series
« on: October 04, 2012, 04:36:44 PM »
I was brainstorming after reading the article on the home-page that mentioned that they thought we needed more opportunities for our Cadets/Juniors to compete against top-level competition and how we need to develop depth and I posted these ideas on the comments, but figured I would share them here as well to get some feedback:

I think it would be great to put together Regional Dual Teams within the United States.

There could be 8 reigons nation-wide. The kick-off event for each season would be a Regional Qualifying Individual tournament. Individuals from 5-7 states converge to have an individual tournament and the top 3 place-winners at each weight make up the regional dual team (Each region would have an A team, a B team, and an alternate).

Throughout the year there could be three more dual events:

#1) The East and West each have separate dual tournaments where the four eastern most regions get together and the four westernmost regions get together and have an 8-team tournament (4 regions, 2 teams per region).

Event #2 would be the four Northern-most regions and the four Southern-most regions having dual tournaments.

#3) Then the Grand daddy of all events would be the big 16-team national duals event which could be seeded by the results of the 2 prior events.

Each team member would get about 10 matches total at the three events, plus 5-7 more at the qualifier event against the very best that the nation has to offer. Individual records could be kept and the best from each weight could be given some sort of individual awards, or gain the top seed for the world-team trials, or something of that nature

This would really create an additional 4 major events for the Olympic styles besides Nationals in Fargo.

Some problems with this idea that I see right off the bat. It would be expensive and would be a lot of traveling since each team would essentially be made up from 6-7 different states, but if the kids really want to be part of the elite events, they have to travel anyway. I believe i saw some names signed up for Super 32, the JJ Classic, and The Freakshow which shows some kids are willing to travel and this wouldn't be a big deal.

Feel free to throw out some t houghts or suggestions on how this idea could be better.

High School & Lower / multiple state qualifiers at same weight/same team
« on: September 14, 2012, 12:26:10 PM »
How many states allow more than one wrestler per team to qualify for state at the same weight class?

For those that do allow this, is there a limit? For example in North Dakota Class "A" the teams can bring 3 or 4 non-point scoring alternates to the state tournament.

How is this different from some of the other states that allow this?

Coaching and Technique / Coaching a new team.
« on: July 09, 2012, 02:15:48 AM »
What advice or tips would you give to a high school coach who is moving and taking over a brand new team in a place they are very unfamiliar with?

What are some good ways for a coach to establish himself with the athletes/asst. Coaches/parents?

Any other advice from anyone else who has gone through this before?
