Fantasy Wrestling / Re: 2012 Fanasy league
« on: September 23, 2011, 01:04:13 AM »
I would just like to throw my hat in the ring for the Stand-By List/or hopefully 2nd League.  If we can get enough people to start a separate league that would be amazing.  We've still got a decent amount of time before the draft would start to recruit participants.  Plus we could pencil in all the others guys already on the Stand-By list for the 2nd League.

Akin-Do you have a rough number as to how many possible entries we may have for a 2nd League at the moment??

Thanks guys it's good to hear some positive feedback, I was just taken aback at how easy it was to underrate Precin and not appreciate his accomplishments and dominance without glancing at his stats.  Thought it was worth shedding a light on the extent of Brandon Precin's prowess.

All in all I'm just glad to have the season approaching shortly, hopefully college and pro football will be enough to tide me over these last 2 months or so before they get on the mat for real.  Cannot wait to get back into some Fantasy Wrestling this year either, hope to learn from a lot of the rookie mistakes that hindered me last year.

I know this is off a tangent from the current conversation, I was just looking for a place I could share this and figured this would be the best of any.

I'm a die-hard Iowa and in my anticipation and angst for this upcoming season, I was surfing several college wrestling websites looking for my fix.  For some reason un-remembered, I began scanning the profiles of McDonough's 3 career losses (Escobedo, Robles, and Precin). I was a little surprised but rather impressed with Precin's 138-31 career record. He never even had less than 33 wins a year.  But what stuck out to me was his losses.  Of his 31 career losses, he lost by bonus points a mere 4 TIMES!

Four Times!! ,,,,

Now, I realize some guys have gone through their careers giving up even fewer bonus points, I was just amazed and admittedly caught off guard at just how difficult it must have been to score points on Precin.  He was never teched, got majored once each in his Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior seasons, and the only time Precin was pinned was just after he was leading McDonough 4-0 late in the 3rd period during the Iowa-NU dual this past season.

Like I said I know this isn't the most insane statistic ever, it just seemed rather noteworthy to me, perhaps Precin may never quite get the recognition he deserves.  I mean the guy had 15 losses while starting the entirety of his true freshman season.  And was majored once, that's it! A full-time starter, in the Big 10, as a true freshman, and he gets majored once in 48 matches, incredible.

Just gives me a new appreciation for the quality of wrestler Brandon Precin was throughout his career.  Best of luck to him in his future with Northwestern, he should be very beneficial for the 125-149 pounders in their room.

Fantasy Wrestling / Re: Fantasy 2012 talk (#1 PICK)

I would have to go with McDonough also.  He really got tough on top last year and racked up the bonus points and pins over his frosh year.

The only 2 losses of his career have both graduated and he is going to be favored for bonus points in almost every match this coming season.

Iowa does wrestle a few less matches than most other teams which could set him back a little bit, but he's also never been a guy to miss matches (whether it be injury, rest, etc).

Taylor and Oliver both could easily put up numbers that rival or surpass McDonough.  I just think his consistency, dominance, and lack of challenge come NCAA's makes him too hard to pass up with the #1 pick.

Either way, you separate McDonough and Precin just in case they are the best two in the country you can't punish them for wrestling three times while the other two avoided them.

I knew Robles didn't wrestle either of them, but I missed the story about him avoiding them.  How did he manage to do that?

Who ever said Robles avoided anyone??  Of course you have to separate McDonough and Precin, why have them wrestle for a fourth time this year when neither guy has met Robles or Nicholson either.  As long as they keep McDonough and Precin on opposite sides that's all that really matters.

The duck is pretty slick, but what does that have to do with the cartwheel? Ok so he did a cartwheel in the middle of his match, wow.  All he's about is antics and arrogance like at the very start of the match when he ran all the way across the mat.  All he cares about is how to get himself noticed.

So Yak, Marion must have impressed you with his recent performance against a slightly winded Alton?  Seems as you did quite the wheeling and dealing(especially for a PSU fan) to get him :o

Despite the dual win over PSU I just think that come NCAA's Iowa might just be a little short on firepower to win it.  They'd at least need a few guys to go on a run and wrestle well above their seed (could be anybody from 165-Hwt).  Both Penn St. and Cornell have at least a little more solid tourney team and a few things would have to fall into place for the Hawks to win it again.  But hopefully I'm completely wrong :-[

Just glancing at some of the Cowboy's in recent years, it looks like Jared Rosholt would be the leading candidate with 151 bouts in his career. Coleman next with 144 followed by JT and JH with 139. I think I remember JH missing a couple of duals though, JT didn't come out of redshirt till towards the middle of the year. Seems like Coleman missed some time with a knee problem. Don't remember Jared missing any.

If memory servers me correctly I'm pretty sure Coleman Scott didn't come off his redshirt for awhile either.  I can remember the Iowa-OSU dual in OK that year when Scott wrestled Charlie Falck and both were True Frosh and I'm pretty sure it was one of Scott's first matches off redshirt...Hopefully someone can verify.

Cruo

You were doing fine until the last sentence "Steinhaus is not quite as good as Gambrall, . . . ".  I sure hope that KS makes you eat those words on 2/20 at Williams Arena.

They are close.  Gambrall has 4 losses to ranked guys and 3 wins over ranked guys, split with #7 Loder.  Steinhaus has 8 losses to ranked guys and 4 wins over ranked guys, split with #9 Perry.  Steinhaus has wrestled the tougher schedule so far for sure.  Based on the results though they are both guys that fall in somewhere between 8th and 15th.  I just think Gambrall is a little better right now, not significantly by any means.  There is no scientific reason for it, I just know all 4 of his losses were extremely close, and 3 of them were back to back to back at Midlands where he was in the match or had the lead late in each.  Something was wrong with the whole team at Midlands, and I'll take Gambrall to win all three of those matches if wrestled again.  184 is one of those weights where I think the 5th through 15th best guys can all beat eachother on any given day.  It'll be a good match for the fans when they meet and it can go either way.  Right now I'll take Gambrall.  I'll have to see how GG does against Kissel on Friday and how Steinhaus does against Wright on Sunday.

Well put Cruo, can't agree much more than that.  184 as you said is kind of a crapshoot of a weight this year.  It's a little top heavy with guys like Smith and Honeycutt, but the parity of all the guys in the Round of 12 range really mean a lot of things could happen at this weight at NCAA's.  More than half of the Top 20 at 184 are underclassman as well, which only adds to the unpredictability come tourney time.
