Is Pearl Jam classic rock?
« on: March 14, 2010, 04:26:33 PM »
Easily within the last 3-4 months I have heard Pearl Jam played a dozen or so times on an area classic rock station.

My question is, Is Pearl Jam classic rock?

I don't know if I dont' want them to be as it would really be the first band that I listened to growing up that is considered classic rock, and would be the first thing outside of my neck, shoulder and knee that make me feel old.

So are they?

I'd vote no.  They are not classic rock.  They are from the grunge rock era and I am not sure that any other band from that musical era are being considered for this classification.  When we all can conclusively agree that Nirvana, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains can be classified as classic rock then we can say that Pearl Jam is as well.

Yes.

Interesting how what was at one time cutting edge music soon becomes dated, it goes from Cutting Edge to Top 40, to the final degredation.....Muzak.

We have a new station here that they claim is the "New Generation of Classic Rock"....they play a lot of Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Poison etc....pretty much the music that necessitated the need for classic rock to begin with. And yes they play Pearl Jam. Nirvana, AIC etc...

So far as I can tell, the interval for this is about 20 years, so they're on the cusp.  But cheer up:  you don't really have one foot in the grave until it's a "feel-good oldie".

Every couple of years some disaffected musician "reinvents" Rock to get it back to it's roots (it having lost its' way and been co-opted by the powers that be) the movement sweeps the music world inspiring many imitators. Great marketing tool repeated over and over.

This is when I came to the realization that I was over the hill, when I started finding music I liked in the $1.99 bargain bin.

I know that feeling.

It's when I started listening to the Chieftians and other "Traditional" music. By the way, they have a new album coming out inspired by the San Patricos!

KISS is definitely teetie bopper kiddie rock.  BARF!!!  All the 12 year olds loved it.
