2017 Hodge Trophy
« on: March 20, 2017, 09:54:13 PM »
Your Finalists:

J'den Cox, 3x Champ, 4x AA (1st, 5th, 1st, 1st)
Season Record: 28-0, 6 pins, 67.9% bonus
Career Record: 136-5

Jason Nolf, 1x Champ, 2x AA (2nd, 1st)
Season Record: 27-0, 14 pins, 92.6% bonus
Career Record: 60-2

Zain Retherford, 2x Champ, 3x AA (5th, 1st, 1st)
Season Record: 28-0, 17 pins, 92.9% bonus
Career Record: 95-3

Kyle Snyder, 2x Champ, 3x AA (2nd, 1st, 1st)
Season Record: 17-0, 4 pins, 76.5% bonus
Career Record: 58-4

Something of note: 2x Champ and 3x AA Dean Heil (4th, 1st, 1st), who just racked his first undefeated season with a whopping 2 pins and 41.9% bonus rate, was left off the list. Will they add him to the list next year if he goes undefeated again en route to his 3rd title?

Supposed criteria:
1. A wrestler’s record;
2. Number of pins;
3. Dominance on the mat;
4. Quality of competition;
5. Past credentials;
6. Sportsmanship/citizenship; and
7. Heart.

From WIN:
The first four criteria are the primary criteria. Number of pins is an extremely important criteria. Part of the reason the award was created was to elevate the importance of the pin, and to motivate top collegians to go for the fall. The Hodge Trophy is a single-season award. However, if you have two candidates who are virtually equal, consideration can be given to past credentials, which is criteria No. 5. The last two criteria should be used to help guide voters to select a winner who also is a good representative of the sport.

Who should win it this year?

Kyle Snyder says Retherford has earned it.

I would agree.  He pretty much put his stamp on that one with his finals match.

Its gotta be Zain I think.  Despite having some close matches he ended with more pins than Nolf and had an absolutely dominant run through the tournament.

I don't think Cox is in the conversation despite being a Senior, and Snyder barely wrestled any matches and got no pins

I guess I'd go with ZR. I think there should be an award for someone like Cox, though. He's been dominant, but in a different way. Regarding Snyder, I don't think he will be pinning a lot of heavy weights, but he dominates non the less.
