Gross is a no show in the SDSU meet.  :(
What was the reasoning for this?  To attempt to stay undefeated until the NCAA's?

From SDSU web site:

"At 133 pounds, defending national champion and top-ranked Seth Gross of SDSU was held out of the lineup due to injury, shelving a highly anticipated matchup against Fix, who is ranked No. 10. Fix instead wrestled Spencer Huber and gave the Cowboys a 10-0 lead with a 19-1 second-period technical fall."

Thanks N!  I appreciate it.  Too bad about being injured.  Perhaps it is all mental!!   ;D

So my prediction was not accurate.  I see that a number of #1's have lost, but Nickal is not among them.

Huh? Don’t think any #1’s have gone down yet, but a couple may have ducked the competition that would have knocked them off.

Anyone taking Hall over Valencia this Friday?

well I guess you have to consider the ranker....if you peek at our resident ranker WrestleStat, Ashnault's beat down on #1 Jordan wasn't enough to knock off the top of the dog pile, but he did hand Jordan his first loss.

I've got the mighty mite.  Hall looks like a midget compared to Valencia.  Valencia is probably even bigger this year.

Nice call @Ryou. I thought Zahid may have widened the gap, but Mark Hall is always game.

Based off TOM rankings, Valencia is the first #1 to go down.

At the conclusion of the regular season, only five pre-season #1’s went undefeated. Those five are:

Yianni, Nolf, Joseph, Martin, and Nickal.

Former #1 Lee went down to Rivera and Picc.
#1 Gross is looking for a medical 6th year as he shut down for the season with a back injury.
#1 Kolodzik went down to Ashnault and Kropman.
#1 Valencia went down to Hall and Lewis.
#1 Stoll went down to Jensen, Hillger, and White.

All new #1’s are undefeated at their weight class.

125: Rivera, undefeated at 125, 1 loss at 133 to Micic
133: Micic
149: Ashnault
174: Hall
285: Steveson

Most current #1’s remain as the lone undefeated wrestler in their class. The exceptions are at 125, 165, and 197. Along with Rivera, Picc and Mueller haven’t taken a loss at 125. Marinelli is perfect at 165. Weigel is undefeated at 197.

It’s looking possible that we end up with 10 undefeated NCAA Champs on the season. Has this ever happened?

125: Rivera / Piccininni
133: Micic
141: Yanni
149: Ashnault
157: Nolf
165: Joseph / Marinelli
174: Hall
184: Martin / Shakur
197: Nickal
285: Steveson

9 weights out of 10 are B1G..  10 of 12 are B1G and 2 will down down at the conference tournament and th result could very well reverse at NCAAs.  I think Martin has teh toughest road to a B1G title.

(Note, I am excluding Mueller, only 5 of 15 wins were against opponents with winning records)

I mean, technically Gross went undefeated too.  :D

I can't remember if it was last year or the year before that there were 10 undefeated after the conference tournaments, 1 at each weight. I tried to look up whether we'd ever had 10 undefeated champions. I couldn't prove it had. It may have in the early days, but the records are spotty.

I'd say the most likely wrestlers to win the title with a loss include Zahid, Fix, Suriano, Spencer Lee, Kolodzik, or McKenna. Maybe the White/Dhesi/Cassar triumvirate at 285, but Gable looks great.

I believe I may have missed Cornell's Arujau as an undefeated 125 lber (his only loss was to his teammate up at 133).

@OkieSpladle, I agree with your list. Especially Lee and Zahid.

That flew under everyone's radar because of the L on his record.  He's only wrestled 1 in the top 10, but that by fall over Pat Glory Princeton...and to pin glory is making a statement.
