Weekend Upsets with WrestleStat - Week 11 2018-2019
« on: January 14, 2019, 09:27:53 AM »
So the first weekend of the "dual season" did NOT less us down!

For the 2nd time, Fix and Suriano battled for another 1/2 hour match [not officially, but because of replays, etc), but this time, Fix came out on top.

A few other notable upsets were #13 Tristan Moran of Wisconsin over #4 Nick Lee of Penn State in their dual, as well as #38 Josh Hokit of Fresno State over #6 Willie Miklus of Iowa State. I got to see that one in person, wasn't much fun being an ISU grad...

May be an upset on paper, anyone there or observed the n streamof that bout knows the ref pulled the rug out from both wrestlers.  Absolutely horrible refereeing.  Multiple required video reviews, 5?, in the bout including one lasting over 15 minutes minute to resolve. Total bout time was 31 minutes. Then he makes the hands in face call to end it on a technical violation.  Both wrestlers were hand fighting and gauging distance with a stretched hand to the forehead all bout long, then BAM. 1 point Fix at the end of the SV.

It wasn't near the bout anyone expected.  I don't recall a single real shot by either wrestler, just a lot circling ducking, dodging and hand fighting.  Escapes were within 10 secs of the start, with the exception of the last in SV when Suriano put up 22 secs on Kix.

Still, it didn't deserve to end that way.

On the other hand, a cynic would say that the refs did wrestling fans a favor by giving them something to argue about.

Funny thing is, neither side was arguing for or agin either wrestler.  All were tearing down the ref for killing the bout with a lame call.

I wasn't there, but I did watch the stream and the replays, and the one that was called was the only clear hands to the face I could see. But I'm not a ref, so my view may not be worth much.
