20-21 Season
« on: November 20, 2020, 09:31:33 AM »
NJ just pushed the 20-21 season back to a mid March start  Ends mid April, no state tournament. Conferences can run a 1 day end of season tournament in mid April, no spectators, not even family.  The season now coincides with baseball, lacrosse and track...and will be sure to lose some wrestlers.

You would THINK that they would wait on more word about the oncoming vaccines before making such hasty decision.

Texas pushed the season to start in February, with the state tournament in March. A good number of coaches down here have expressed that they wouldn't mind seeing this become a permanent schedule change.
Imagine the good that could be done, if people were less worried about their differences, and more worried about doing good for everyone.

Some good news, USA Wrestling New Jersey just announced that if the state schools sports authority doesn't schedule a state tournament, it will sponsor one April 30-May 2.

No info on qualifying though other than HS only, folk style.  It could be an open, an invitational, or qualification by placement in a conference tournament.  If an open, it would enable those opting to play an alternative spring sport to opt in and compete.

We start on 3/1 with the state tournament 4/23-24. Only duals, tris and quads until postseason. Will be a crazy season.

Anthony Ashnault's company Mobbin Media has put together a nice pre-season invitational tournament for NJ kids.

WA had no season.  States were to be 2 weeks ago.  Nothing, zilch, nada!

The NJ Gov finally assented.  The kids get a state final albeit participation will be limited to a chosen few selected by regional committees that will compete in 4 regional tournaments that will feed into a state tournament.  Ordinarily every kid from every school would get a shot regardless of record.  Not this year. Coaches submit a roster, committee picks from the roster based on competitive record.  A committee chooses who is in.  Top 4 in the region move on to the state tournament the following week.  No team tournament this year.  The kids have a 4 week season in order to stake a claim for an invitation.

Anthony Ashnault's off season invitational 2 weeks ago helped convince the Gov it can work.  112 wrestlers, over 80 coaches and not a single COVID case in the bunch 10 days afterward, including coaches, refs scorers admins and medicos.  Close to 250 in the HS simultaneously. The logistics were pretty slick to keep under the state max for gatherings. Staggered arrivals to the boys lockers for weigh in and changing, then out with your clothes to a warm up mats in the cafeteria until called out for a bout.  Losers to the girls locker room and out of the building within 30 minutes, winners to the stands and then off to the warm up room before the next bout.
