Last Chance Olympic Qualifier
« on: May 07, 2021, 07:33:17 PM »
JO did not qualify 65 for FS.  So he does not go to Tokyo.  I guess it was a lackluster match on his part.  I have not seen it, just read about it on themat.com.

We have Coon and Porter trying to qualify in GR tomorrow.

Porter and Coon did not make it either, so we have 5 in FS, 4 in GR going to Tokyo.  I don't remember a worse situation for us in the olympics.  But I don't think there are many countries sending a full compliment.   So we can take some solace in that.

With regard to FS, only Iran and Russia are sending full compliments.

GR -  Only Cuba is sending a full compliment

WFS - China, Japan, Mongolia, Russia, and US.

Top 10 countries and how many participants are going to Olympics.  So we are number 2 with 15, so that is not too bad.

 ROC    17
United States    15
 Cuba    12
 Japan    12
 China    11
 Iran    11
 Kazakhstan    11
 Tunisia    10
 Ukraine    10
 Mongolia    9

Top 10 for MFS/GR

 ROC    11
 Iran    11
United States    9
 Cuba    9
 Kazakhstan    8
 Algeria    8
 Uzbekistan    8
 Turkey    7
 Georgia    7
 Japan    6

Top 10 for MFS

 ROC    6
 Iran    6
United States    5
 Kazakhstan    5
 Algeria    4
 Uzbekistan    4
 Turkey    4
 Japan    4
 Belarus    4
 India    4
 Cuba    3

Top 10 in GR  ( I included all who have 4 entries)
 Cuba    6
 ROC    5
 Iran    5
United States    4
 Algeria    4
 Uzbekistan    4
 Georgia    4
 Tunisia    4
 Egypt    4
 Armenia    4
 Kyrgyzstan    4
 Germany    4
 Hungary    4

So our women are doing the job.  We are sending 5 of 6 in MFS and 4 of 6 for GR.  I believe we have a number of projected medalists among the women and men FS'ers.  I don't think we have any projected for GR, but I have to admit, I have not kept up with GR.  But none of our GR wrestlers qualified in the WC's, they all qualified in the Pan Am's.

Russia as a team no. Russians - Yes, under the Olympic flag.  Russia was barred due to the doping fiasco.led by the Russian athletics federation

The harsh take on this is that Oliver does not belong at the Olympics then.  Obviously he lost to two who were not yet qualified for the Olympics.  65kg is not a strong weight for the US it would seem.  GR has a similar issue with 2 weights.

Solace in the fact no team is taking a full compliment.

Solace in the fact that Olympics may not happen this year either.

Last chance qualifier
Semi final, last bout to qualify for the Olympics, I would think Oliver would crank it up 3 notches.  He didn't. Down 3-0, he hit a TD with :46 left then  had to work through Gadzhiev hand fighting.  He gave a up pushout and a pushout out coiverted to a TD at the edge.  Gadzhiev was on the offensive in period 1 and kept Oliver trapped at the edge. He was far too defensive for a "last chance" bout and it was likely his last chance.
