Good thing I'm staying home from the Olympics
« on: July 08, 2021, 04:53:55 PM »
Boy am I glad I didn't buy tickets to Japan for the Olympics.  They just mandated no spectators at any event due to COVID.

Not that I would have anyway.  The Winter Olympics happened in UT and I had tickets for a few events.  We then moved to Hawaii and I gave them up because I couldn't justify the expense of flying all the way there for them.  My sister lived right there and was unaware of it really.  I think we had tickets to speed skating and snowboard jumping.  Oh well.  Next time it is in the country I'll probably go.

Talk about anti-vax.   Families will just have to watch their youngins on TV.  Hopefully our US folks will have something better than NBC so they can actually see the competition their youngins will face.  And actually watch the preliminary rounds their youngins are in.

It's NBC, it will be wall to wall coverage of swimming and gymnastics.  I assume you will have to catch clips on YouTube of other sports the following day.

We can get CBC Olympic coverage which is usually live and covers the whole event.  But we'll see.  We might have to pay for the other Olympic channels.  Waiting for the broadcast schedule and which network will cover what.  Absolutely right about NBC though, but they may cover a bit of the track events too.   And I'm sure they have programmed more "Up close and personal" features than actual competition.  No doubt about it.  If the last 5-6 Olympics are any indication.

Japan is now in the midst of an infection spike.

IOC always maintains athlete / coach housing.  I wonder if they will segregate those without vax from those with vax.

The medallists will have to put the medals around their own necks.   Are they not outside with masks and gloves?  This is overblown to me.   That is part of the honor, bowing down and having someone drape the medal around your neck.

The fully-vaccinated percent of the total population as of yesterday was 48% in the US and 19% in Japan. The dropping rate of new vaccinations in the US can be at least partly explained by the 5% of Democrats and 30% of Republicans that are saying they don't intend to ever get vaccinated, but what's the problem in Japan? Is there a vaccine supply shortage? The number of doses administered as a percentage of the population in Japan is only half that of the US. It seems unlikely to me that it's a political issue there too.

Japan contracted late for vaccines. supplies arrived later, vaccinations started much later than US.

OK, so what's the Olympic Wrestling schedule and how can I watch?

I'll put that in another thread.

This has the makings of a disaster of an Olympics.

They are even talking about cancelling the Games at the last minute.
